"Billy Collins puts the 'fun' back in 'profundity.' "
--Alice Fulton
From the two-term Poet Laureate of the United States Billy Collins comes his first compilation of new and selected poems in 12 years. Aimless Love combines new poems with selections from four previous books - Nine Horses, The Trouble with Poetry, Ballistics, and Horoscopes for the Dead. Collins's unmistakable voice, which brings together plain speech with imaginative surprise, is clearly heard with every word, reminding us how he has managed to enrich the tapestry of contemporary poetry and greatly expand its audience. His work is featured in top literary magazines such as The New Yorker, Poetry, and The Atlantic, and he sells out reading venues all across the country. Appearing regularly in The Best American Poetry series, his poems appeal to readers and live audiences far and wide and have been translated into more than a dozen languages. By turns playful, ironic, and serious, Collins's poetry captures the nuances of everyday life while leading the reader into zones of inspired wonder. In the poet's own words, he hopes that his poems "begin in Kansas and end in Oz." Touching on the themes of love, loss, joy, and poetry itself, these poems showcase the best work of this "poet of plenitude, irony, and Augustan grace" (The New Yorker).
EnvoyGo, little book,
out of this house and into the world,
carriage made of paper rolling toward town
bearing a single passenger
beyond the reach of this jittery pen
and far from the desk and the nosy gooseneck lamp.
It is time to decamp,
put on a jacket and venture outside,
time to be regarded by other eyes,
bound to be held in foreign hands.
So off you go, infants of the brain,
with a wave and some bits of fatherly advice:
stay out as late as you like,
don’t bother to call or write,
and talk to as many strangers as you can.
Los oyentes también disfrutaron...

Whale Day brings together more than fifty poems and showcases the deft mixing of the playful and the serious that has made Billy Collins one of our country’s most celebrated and widely read poets. Here are poems that leap with whimsy and imagination, yet stay grounded in the familiar, common things of everyday experience. Collins takes us for a walk with an impossibly ancient dog, discovers the original way to eat a banana, meets an Irish spider, and even invites us to his own funeral.

“America’s favorite poet” (The Wall Street Journal) has found a new form for his unique poetic style: the small poem. Here Collins writes about his trademark themes of nature, animals, poetry, mortality, absurdity, and love—all in a handful of lines. Neither haiku nor limerick, the small poem pushes to an extreme poetry’s famed power to condense emotional and conceptual meaning. Inspired by the small poetry of writers, the poems of Musical Tables show one of our greatest poets channeling his unique voice into a new phase of his exceptional career.

Why a poetry album? Easy answer: I love poetry. I love reading it. I love memorizing it. I love hearing great actors recite it. As the poet Mark Strand wrote, “Ink runs from the corners of my mouth / There is no happiness like mine / I have been eating poetry.” In the past, when I was full from eating, I have had the audacity to set poetry to music. But, on this audiobook, you will hear the music of the poems.

Beloved by her fans, special to the poet’s own heart, Mary Oliver’s dog poems offer a special window into her world. Mary Oliver’s Dog Songs is a celebration of the special bond between human and dog, as understood through the poet’s relationships to the canines that have accompanied her daily walks, warmed her home, and inspired her work. In A Thousand Mornings, Mary Oliver returns to the imagery that has come to define her life’s work, transporting us to the marshland and coastline of her beloved home, Provincetown, Massachusetts.

Vulnerable, tender, acute, these are serious poems, brave poems, exploring with honesty the ambiguous moment between the rapture of youth and the grace of acceptance. A daughter tends to aging parents. A woman struggles with infertility—“What if, instead of carrying / a child, I am supposed to carry grief?”—and a body seized by pain and vertigo as well as ecstasy. A nation convulses: “Every song of this country / has an unsung third stanza, something brutal.” And still Limón shows us, as ever, the persistence of hunger, love, and joy, the dizzying fullness of our too-short lives.

With the imagery of a poet and the reflection of a philosopher, David Whyte turns his attention to 52 ordinary words, each its own particular doorway into the underlying currents of human life. Beginning with "Alone" and closing with "Work", each chapter is a meditation on meaning and context, an invitation to shift and broaden our perspectives on the inevitable vicissitudes of life: pain and joy, honesty and anger, confession and vulnerability, the experience of feeling besieged and the desire to run away from it all.

Historia
“Long live the King” hailed Entertainment Weekly upon publication of Stephen King’s On Writing. Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999—and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery.

Historia
In this stunning collection of new poems, Mary Oliver returns to the imagery that has defined her life’s work, describing with wonder both the everyday and the unaffected beauty of nature. Herons, sparrows, owls, and kingfishers flit around in meditations on love, artistry, and impermanence. Whether considering a bird’s nest, the seeming patience of oak trees, or the artworks of Franz Marc, Oliver reminds us of the transformative power of attention and how much can be contained within the smallest moments.

Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, Marie-Laure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is 12, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.

Billy is the Best!
I love listening to Billy Collins read his own poetry. His dry, understated delivery actually heightens the humor and pathos of the written poems. Always inviting and often playful, his poems nevertheless startle and provoke. Like his favorite 17-year-old daughter, we love Billy "just the way he is."

I love Billy Collins’ poems!
I first learned of Billy Collins when he spoke at my high school while U.S. poet laureate. His poems are taunt, and light, cutting to the core of the subject. He has given me a goal: to write as close to his measure as possible. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I. And so I return to listen again...and again.

the audio version is abridged.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Liked the poem "Divorce."
Any additional comments?
It should be noted that the audio has 53 poems while Collins' book contains well over a 100 poems. That said, the selection here is great just wished it carried all the poems the book has.
Also, if you are trying to read along with the book then it could get a bit tedious since the poems on the audio are not in the same order in the book, so be prepared for lots of flipping back and forth between the table of contents then for the page number.

In Love with Aimless Love
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I own this book in hard cover, but a visual reading cannot compare with hearing it read by Billy Collins himself. Beginning with the first poem, "The Country" (my favorite humorous poem in the book) and ending with "The Names" written (for the victims of September 11th and their survivors) this book of poetry illustrates the wide scope of Billy Collins poetic gift. It is profound, witty, ironic, and memorable. Buy this book!
What did you like best about this story?
Hearing Billy Collins read his own work, because his emphasis and inflections added insight into his meaning and I felt as if he were in the room with me, saying "Reader" Looker, gazer, skimmer, skipper, thumb-licking page turner.." to me alone.
Which character – as performed by Billy Collins – was your favorite?
I liked the first and last poems in this book the best, but every poem in the book was memorable.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I enjoy listening to a few poems at a time, letting them settle, and rereading. This is a book I will return to again and again.
Any additional comments?
I would like Audible to produce more books of Billy Collin's poetry and perhaps his anthologies of collected poems from other poets, such as 180.

Billy Collins, former USA Poet Laureate, proves once again why he is my favorite living poet. Hearing him read his poetry is an added treat. He is simultaneously deep and reachable, and speaks to the experience of every day life. Highly recommended!
