It was like the virtual voice was playing a joke on the listener. For one character, every time they said "I" ( ī ) it was pronounced "i" (ih-soft i). And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Distracting from what I imagine would otherwise have been a wonderful book had they hired a voice actor to read it.
