Acerca de esta escucha
What is art? Why do we find some things beautiful but not others? Is it wrong to share MP3s? These are just some of the questions explored by aesthetics, the philosophy of art. In this sweeping introduction, Charles Taliaferro skilfully guides us through different theories of art and beauty, tackling issues such as who owns art and what happens when art and morality collide. From Plato on poetry to Ringo Starr on the drums, this is a perfect introduction for anyone interested in the fascinating questions art can raise.

Historia
In this Very Short Introduction audiobook, Bence Nanay introduces the field of aesthetics, considering both Western and non-Western aesthetic traditions and exploring why it is sometimes misunderstood or considered to be too elitist - by artists, musicians, and even philosophers. As Nanay shows, so-called "high art" has no more claims on aesthetics than sitcoms, tattoos, or punk rock.

Exciting new developments in brain science are continuing the debates on these issues, and the field has now expanded to include biologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, and philosophers. This controversial book clarifies the potentially confusing arguments, and the major theories, while also outlining the amazing pace of discoveries in neuroscience. Covering areas such as the construction of self in the brain, mechanisms of attention, the neural correlates of consciousness, and the physiology of altered states of consciousness, Susan Blackmore highlights our latest findings.

Rescuing the subject from dry abstractions, Clare Connors focuses on the real questions that emerge when we read and study literature - such as how we find meaning and how literature relates to its historical context - before exploring the response of theorists. Using selections from works including poetry by Christina Rossetti and Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain, Connors unites theory with practice, revealing how enjoyable it is to think about reading.

Why do good things happen to bad people? Can we prove whether God exists? What is the difference between right and wrong? Medieval philosophers were centrally concerned with such questions, questions which are as relevant today as a thousand years ago when the likes of Anselm and Aquinas sought to resolve them. In this fast-paced and enlightening guide, Sharon M. Kaye takes us on a whistle-stop tour of medieval philosophy, revealing the debt it owes to Aristotle and Plato.

Historia
Epistemology is the philosophical study of knowledge. Without knowledge, scientific enquiry is meaningless and we can’t analyse the world around us. But what exactly is knowledge and how do we obtain it? Should we trust our senses? When is belief knowledge? Presuming no prior experience, Robert Martin covers everything in the topic from scepticism and induction to Kant’s transcendentalism. Clear and readable, this audiobook is essential for philosophy students and a much needed introduction for the general reader.

Reseñas editoriales
Most people at some point have encountered a painting or a photo and thought, "That’s not art". But when pressed to explain what art is exactly, we quickly clam up. This thoughtful and well-crafted introduction to the world of aesthetics aims to help listeners with that question and many more. Performed by Andrea Powell with her customary sophisticated and engaging delivery, this audiobook looks at everything from Plato to Ringo Starr in an effort to help listeners understand some of the most central questions surrounding art and the philosophy of art.

GreatIntroduction to Aesthetics
If you could sum up Aesthetics: Bolinda Beginner Guides in three words, what would they be?
Clear, informative, accessible
Would you be willing to try another book from Charles Taliaferro? Why or why not?
Yes
What about Andrea Powell’s performance did you like?
Very good
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No, but it did make me more aware of what areas of aesthetics are interesting to me and give me ideas of what i would like to look into more.
Any additional comments?
As an art student, I found this a very helpful introduction on the topic of aesthetics. It covers a broad range of artistic practices, painting, literature , film etc from both western and Asian context. Best of all it isn't full of the jargon and long incomprehensible words that has kept me from reading art literature in the past.
