Adrift on a Sea of Belief: A Guide for Walkaway-Witnesses in Finding God is the first book of its kind. Rebecca Mantore provides next-step “what now?” information for walkaway-Witnesses - those Jehovah’s Witnesses who courageously jump ship to navigate their life apart from Watchtower control.
Dr. Mantore is supremely qualified to write this book: a walkaway-Witness herself who left the church after 34 years of living as a model Jehovah’s Witness, raising a family in the faith as well as performing years of missionary work in Appalachia and decades of voluntary service.
Walkaway-Witnesses who reject the crushing control of the Watchtower Society are burdened with shame, guilt and fear - often alone without family or friends - on unsteady ground religiously, socially and emotionally. Dr. Mantore identifies elements of the unique phenomenon fleeing Witnesses face. These elements include running from WT control at the same time uncertain of where they are headed, feeling unqualified to chart their own religious course, retaining some of the good-for-nothing-slave mentality and a big time attitude against rules and pompous advice. She validates what leaving members have experienced and helps them locate where they are in the process of recovery.
Her book details how to seek safety and heal from the emotional trauma left by the WT Society on their spirituality as well as reinforces the you-do-count message former members long to hear. Additionally, she alerts readers to common situations encountered by walkaway-Witnesses as they enter the contemporary world - without Watchtower controls - and how to handle those situations. Witnesses who leave, face a sea of belief having to rethink their most basic standards and choices. Adrift aids former members in the discovery of the hidden values of their heart that have been overwritten by the Watchtower Society as well as how to be directed - not just away from JW.com - but toward their own fabulous life filled with love, trust and respect.Adrift is a relevant must-read for any Witness who has left - or is contemplating leaving - the Watchtower in pursuit of the sacred life they long to live.
