The mission of the Falkland was to establish a new colony twenty light years beyond any other human outpost. Godfrey was a maintenance engineer deep in the bowels of the ship when it plowed into a coronal mass ejection from a dying star. Only Godfrey and a handful of others survived in the rear section of the ship.
The survivors crowded aboard the last shuttle. Then the captain sent Godfrey to make one last check for survivors. When he returned, the shuttle door was locked. The captain said, “Sorry Godfrey, no more room.” The shuttle detached and headed back toward civilization.
He had been abandoned.
