The wheel of fortune spun again and again in Hernando’s mind. He knew no mortal could control its outcome, but at most change the proportions of each on the spinning disk. He had made quite a life for himself on the island of Fernandina. He held influence over the governor. The people respected him despite the continuation of his youthful dalliances. He owned land including many Indians who worked hard raising cows and mining gold. His wealth gave him the opportunity to settle down and grow old with this as the final result. But that is not where Hernando wanted his wheel to stop. He’d gladly increase the chance of him dying on a scaffold if it also gave him a shot of dining to the triumph of trumpets. He’d been given the opportunity to risk it all for God, gold, and glory. He didn’t care if he had to betray the governor who saw him like a son. It bothered him not that he’d have to leave Catalina pining for him alone. And if the final result of his great expedition west was his screaming soul as savages ate him alive…then so be it.
