One hundred and forty millennia from now, a limited form of interstellar travel has resulted in over a hundred-thousand planets inhabited by one or more of the seven star-faring species of the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. Trade in information, intellectual property, and artifacts created wealth and increased standards. Trade increased protection from the deadliest threat to sentient life by spreading and sharing technology to combat aggressive mutated virus strains that spread from system to system. To manage and protect the basis for their civilizations, the seven sentient species created the All Thing.

Whenever an offense occurred against what was called Right Trade, the All Thing called upon an Adjudicator to resolve the problem. By issuing a Writ, the All Thing empowered the Adjudicator to do whatever they needed to do. An Adjudicator became judge, jury, and, if need be, executioner. They worked in what was called, “a high attrition environment:” New Adjudicators were always in demand.
