In the mountain-shadowed land of Durundal, where age-old oaths still carry weight and kingdoms are bound by blood, a storm of war breaks upon Castle Dru. As fire consumes stone and steel rings through the night, fourteen-year-old Prince Lyall is forced to flee into the bowels of legend — through a long-abandoned tunnel whispered of in old tales and forgotten maps.
Behind him, the cries of the dying echo — his parents slain, his birthright lost. With nothing but a sword too large for his hand and memories too heavy for his heart, Lyall stumbles into exile and is taken in by the noble Clan of the Mountain Lion. Among them, he finds sanctuary, kinship, and the beginnings of manhood. But peace, like shadow at dusk, never lingers long.
Years pass. On the eve of his coming-of-age, fate strikes once more. Ambushed by soldiers of the iron-fisted Emperor of Ataxata, Lyall and his comrades are dragged across the continent and forced to fight as gladiators in a brutal arena — pawns for the empire’s cruel sport, their lives bartered for spectacle and coin.
Amid the blood and sand of the colosseum, Lyall and his comrades have no hope of escape - and look up to the haunting face of a young clan girl imprisoned in the high tower of the Emperor’s palace. Her deep rooted ancestral knowledge may be the key to their freedom — and perhaps to something far greater.
Haunted by visions of fire and vengeance, Lyall begins to remember who he is — and what was taken from him. But to return to Castle Dru, he must become more than a boy, more than a warrior. He must rise as something old and wild, something the world has not seen in an age.
For in the darkness of his soul stirs a legacy long buried — and the wolf is howling.
IN THIS AGE OF HEROES, WHAT IS NOW HAS GONE BEFORE AND WILL RISE AGAIN.
What readers are saying:
I love this series!
This book is about Namir and Lyall (the two characters we saw at the end scene of the first book) and I was happy to find more details on the events that had happened in the first book like General's attack on Clan on the Giant's Claw, the abduction of Dainn and Rufus and their miraculous return. I loved, absolutely loved, the descriptions in the book. They were poetic and very vivid. I also enjoyed the bravery, the friendships and the relationships of the clan people. The characters are very likable from Namir, Lyall to Skyrah. The books in this series are a must read for fantasy lovers. ★★★★★
A Wolf in the Dark
This story runs parallel to book one, but tells the story of what happened to the captive boys, forced to "entertain" the emperor. It proves that females don't have to take on the roles of men or behave in a masculine fashion in order to be bad-ass. Skyrah is one smart girl who knows the best way to defeat her enemy. This episode reminds me of Rome and the gladiators, although it's more violent and death is the only end for each day's battle. You get to experience a more humane side of the General, proving that there is good and bad in everyone. There's also more great development of clan beliefs and customs in this book as well. Loads of research is evident in this story, adding so much depth to the fabulous tale as it unfolds. ★★★★★
Who else but Turner can write a series as wondrous as this? You know you want to read it!
When the characters and the locations become as real as the valleys and fields next door all through the magical writing skills of this fine author, there lies the secret of an enjoyable book. True to life characters, whose passions, fears, and dreams are felt by the readership brought to the forefront by the writing skills of S. E. Turner. ★★★★★
