Gnosticism is a diverse and complex religious and philosophical movement that emerged in the early centuries of the Common Era, primarily in the Mediterranean world. Gnosticism was not a monolithic movement; rather, it encompassed a wide range of sects and schools of thought with differing beliefs and practices. Some prominent Gnostic sects included the Valentinians, Sethians, and the followers of Mani.
Influence on Later Thought: While Gnostic movements largely faded from historical prominence, their ideas have continued to influence Western esotericism, mysticism, and certain strands of philosophy. Elements of Gnostic thought can be traced in the works of various thinkers throughout history.
