Narration too dramatic

I think the writing and the story are good, but the narration is wrong. Much of the story takes place in the protagonist's mind, but the reader seems to want to make the book into an action drama. Instead of a thoughtful depiction of the protagonist's inner life, we get a breathless version of Action! Conflict! Suspense!
