When Major Rufus d’Aumesty unexpectedly becomes the Earl of Oxney, he finds himself living in a remote Norman manor on the edge of Romney Marsh with his noble, hostile, and decidedly odd family. His position is contested both by his greedy uncle and by unexpected claimant Luke Doomsday, a dashing member of the local smuggling clan. They should be natural enemies, but cocksure, enragingly competent Luke is a secretary by trade and quickly becomes an unexpected ally, the partner Rufus needs...and soon the lover he can't live without.

Unfortunately, Luke’s not telling anything like the truth. He came to Stone Manor with an ulterior motive, one he’s hiding even from the lord he can’t resist. And as family secrets unspool on both sides, master and man soon find their positions and their partnership in danger of falling apart…

Dare O say that I prefer Martyn Swain to Cornel Collin’s for narrating Ms Charles work?

On top of that, I loved the story and most of the characters - Conrad and his horrible wife were proper villains.

Rufus was a good chap and Luke - well Luke was a product of his upbringing as a Doomsday. I liked how it all worked out!!

Marvellous narrator

I am a fan of all K. J. Charles' books I've read, and this one certainly didn't disappoint. I really liked Luke's character in the first book so it was great to explore his life as an adult, as well as his unfinished business. The two leads had excellent chemistry. For those who found the narrator difficult to listen to in the first installment, I'm relieved that he is much better here. A lot less awkward pauses, and less accent work. Though I still think listening on 1.1 or 1.15 speed is best. P.S. if you like this book, check out her short story "A Thief in the Night".

A treat to listen to

This sequel was so satisfying! It tied up all the loose ends from book 1, gave us a hot new couple, and endeared me to KJ Charles as a wonderful author, even more than I already was.

Loved it!

Another great story with engaging, complex characters and a well thought out plot that had me listening for hours straight needing to know what was going to happen next. The narration was fantastic as well. I hope there will be more Doomsday Books in the future!

Keep it up, KJ!

This story is a solid 5 in every way. The writing is impressive, and I can visualize every detail of the lyrical, clever, and captivating tale. The storyline, writing, and performance of the second installment of the Doomsday saga are outstanding. Unlike much-acclaimed literature, this story is written with rich layers, making it accessible to many readers. Like most of Charles's work, the characters she creates are so well written it makes the reader love them or hate them, regardless of whether the reader is firmly invested in their fate. The story is beautiful, full of action, humor, mystery, and ghastly deeds, making it emotionally compelling and satisfying as sin.

KJ Charles best yet.
