In 1943, drafted soldier James Thurston, promised Hannah Bennett he would return from war and marry her. Their letters carried a love that distance and danger could not erase. Then one letter, the most important of all, never arrived. Believing James had forgotten her, Hannah married another man, while James came home to find the future he longed for already gone.
Decades passed. They built families, endured joys and sorrows, and carried the quiet ache of what might have been. Until one day, a lost wartime letter was found, still sealed after more than fifty years. Inside were the words Hannah was meant to read so long ago, words that could change everything.
Tender, nostalgic, and filled with faith and longing, A Lifetime Later is a sweeping story of romance rediscovered, reminding us that true love never fades.
NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR, ANNA BETHANY:
"A Lifetime Later" was born from a single research question: What if two people loved each other truly, were torn apart by war and silence, and were reunited later in life? I found several such real-life stories and this book is based on one of them. I wrote this story to honor quiet faithfulness, decade after decade, even when the answers seem non-existent.
Though James and Hannah are fictional, the fragments of their world are drawn from the lives and letters of a generation who held their breath through war and learned to live with endurance. Many families keep boxes of correspondence tied with ribbon, prayers pressed between the pages like wildflowers. In these pages, I wanted to set such a box on the table, untie the ribbon, and let the past come to life.
If you have carried such a burden, I hope this book has made room for your patience and your tears. If you have loved and lost and then lived faithfully in the aftermath, may you feel seen. And if you have ever found yourself surprised by grace, by a phone call, a letter, or a kindness that arrives out of time, may this story remind you that nothing good is wasted in the hands of God. Not even time.
With gratitude for the quiet heroes in my own family and yours,
Anna Bethany
