Acerca de esta escucha
Given Tammy Duckworth’s personal heroism as an Army veteran, her stunning recovery from injuries sustained in the line of duty, and her subsequent career as an influential US senator, it’s easy to see why Joe Biden earmarked her as a possible running mate during his Democratic presidential campaign. Senator Duckworth has logged a long list of firsts during her tenure as the first Thai American member of Congress, including being the first woman with a disability to serve in the House and Senate. But it is her tireless determination to keep going against staggering odds that will rivet listeners of all ages. Evoking Senator Duckworth’s spirited nature with sensitivity and joy, this narrative biography of the groundbreaking military veteran and rising political star will inspire listeners to dream and achieve.

Historia
Tammy Duckworth takes listeners through the amazing - and amazingly true - stories from her incomparable life. In November of 2004, an Iraqi RPG blew through the cockpit of Tammy Duckworth's US Army Black Hawk helicopter. The explosion, which destroyed her legs and mangled her right arm, was a turning point in her life. But as Duckworth shows in Every Day Is a Gift, that moment was just one in a lifetime of extraordinary turns.

Historia
At four years old, Ria Thundercloud was brought into the powwow circle, ready to dance in the special jingle dress her mother made for her. As she grew up, she danced with her brothers all over Indian country. Then Ria learned more styles—tap, jazz, ballet—but still loved the expressiveness of Indigenous dance. And despite feeling different as one of the only Native American kids in her school, she always knew she could turn to dance to cheer herself up.

Historia
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Tama is sent to live in a War Relocation Center in the desert. All Japanese Americans from the West Coast - elderly people, children, babies - now live in prison camps like Minidoka. To be who she is has become a crime, it seems, and Tama doesn’t know when or if she will ever leave. Trying not to think of the life she once had, she works in the camp’s tiny library, taking solace in pages bursting with color and light, love and fairness. And she isn’t the only one.

This edition of Margot Lee Shetterly’s acclaimed book is perfect for young students. It's the powerful story of four African-American female mathematicians at NASA who helped achieve some of the greatest moments in our space program. Before John Glenn orbited the earth, or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as “human computers” used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets, and astronauts, into space.

Historia
In a fast-paced and action-packed narrative, Navy SEAL commander Rorke Denver tackles the questions that have emerged about America's past decade at war - from what makes a hero to why we fight and what it does to us. Heroes are not always the guys who jump on grenades. Sometimes, they are the snipers who decide to hold their fire, the wounded operators who find fresh ways to contribute, or the wives who keep the families together back home.

Well done!
nonfiction, dual-heritage, veterans, illustrated, mothers, senator, overcoming, disability, Asian Americans*****
I bought this to read with some of the grands and the give to my library in Milwaukee County (WI) area, or to metro Indianapolis (Indiana), or to Cleveland (Cuyahoga County Ohio), or maybe even to Patience & Fortitude at the NYPL (or even the Brooklyn (NY) public library.
As you can see, I have no one in Illinois so I can view her astonishing accomplishments as a retired RN and not part of her voting constituency. The same goes for the great imaginative yet sensitive colorful illustrations by Dow Phumiruk. The narrative is by renowned author Christina Soontornvat who knows how to impress but only just far enough not to overwhelm.
Well suited for reading WITH someone of nearly any age including ESL, and great for gifting to anyone, but especially to a school or public library!
And now I have the audio to keep! Cindy Kay clearly displays her talents as a voice actor with this narration!
