Secondly, wow, just wow. There is so much to like about this book, the characters are so well done it feels like they could walk off the page, the emotions the story conveys are strong and raw, I found it impossible not to get drawn in. The book is told from the perspective of an adult telling their child about a pivotal time in their life, I got so swept up that I forgot, I was surprised when I got to the end and it went back to this setting.
I'm impressed by the creativity that went into creating both the main story and all the visions that Alex sees when experiencing psychometry.
The book is well worth listening to and the narration contributes a great delivery that helped convey the strong emotions of the story and excellent character voices.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.

The author does a great job intertwining some history with the story.
Narration was great and I would definitely listen to more by this narrator.
If you have a history with an abusive person this story will be hard to take. It is even if you don’t. You want someone to stand up & stop the madness and wonder why they don’t!
I received a complimentary copy of this audiobook from the publisher/author but voluntarily give my honest review.

At this point in a review, I usually make a funny comment, but not for this book. I will say that Alex is a tough kid who survives because he wants justice for the dead, and because of his deep connection to his deceased father.
The book had elements of Lumley's Necroscope series and Harris' Harper Connelly series, both of which I love, and A Life of Death is a worthy entrant into this subgenre.
Without spoilers, I will say that the ending tied the book together in the best possible way.
Recommended.

I was expecting a typical YA paranormal book. Melodramatic, a bit much at times, but mostly a quick and fun read (or listen, in this case).
To me, this was first and foremost a book about a teenager, who has dealt extensively with trauma and abuse and is struggling to deal with it in addition to figuring out how to be a ‘normal’ kid. Alex has to try to navigate all the other craziness that comes with family, school, puberty, etc.
It is a very sad account of trauma and abuse that some children have to endure, every day of their lives.
It was, at times, really difficult to listen to. It was not gratuitous, violence for the sake of violence. But I think it’s worth knowing about, in case it’s a trigger for any potential listeners.
The paranormal aspect of the storyline was very interesting, but definitely seemed a sideline to the main story of Alex’s family. I love me some paranormal, and I would have liked to have more of that aspect.
Alex’s ability to ‘read’ objects, and the deceased people attached to them, is well done. It’s interesting that it is not just murder victims who he connects with—as a typical storyline might use—but anyone who died in an abrupt, violent and/or traumatic way.
I had very few cons for this listen. The writing was a bit heavy at times; sometimes a bit too much description, or just a bit overly dramatic. Some of the language was a bit clunky at times, too, and I found myself thinking, ‘People don’t really talk like this’. People are, generally speaking, informal in their day to day language; I think that should translate into books, if we are to believe a character, or characters.
And Mr. Ian Gordon’s reading? Well, I’d listen to him read a grocery list.
Ian’s voice is always a welcome and comfortable addition to any story.
All in all, a good listen. I’m glad I had the chance to review.

Child abuse is always hard to accept in any circumstance but particularly so when the victim is a teenager boy who has already lost so much and is trying to find himself. Alex has good instincts and the gift (or the curse) of psychometry. With a touch he relives dramas that are not his, suffers torments that don't belong to him, is victimized by havoc in a life that is already way too complicated. I couldn't muster any sympathy for the mother's character, not even at the very end when she had to face the ugly reality that she tried so hard to ignore at Alex's expenses. The young girlfriend has more sense than she does...
It is not an easy book to listen to. There are many moments of deep grief, but the story is extremely captivating with that touch of the supernatural that makes it even more interesting. I'm curious to find out how the author will develop this trilogy's storyline.
The narration was truly well done and the writing style excellent. Definitely a must listen to audiobook.
