Resumen del Editor

The female Nero Wolfe!

The first outing of Amelia Winslow Brewster ("Amy" to her friends), the elephantine, cigar-smoking, blue-blooded genius of a detective, finds her in a battle of wits with an unknown killer who has neatly framed her nephew. You'll howl with delight as the icon-toppling Amy tackles stuffed-shirts, law enforcement, gargantuan gourmet meals, and crime with equal aplomb. Another rollicking Amy Brewster classic from the glory days of the 1940s.

This has it all!

Any Brewster is one sharp minded woman. She was overweight and one tough detective. This one has plenty of laughs and if you like murder mysteries, don’t miss it! Great narrator.

Amy for the win!!!

Amy is a force to be reckoned with and more than lives up to her reputation. Duplicity and double crosses that shocked me. Rampant greed. Very entertaining and suspenseful. Kept my rapt attention. I voluntarily listened to a free copy of this and am giving an honest review. The narrator did a good job.

Interesting

This story, set in the mid-20th century, followed an intrigue begun in the French Revolution. Set around antique glass globes, you follow with romance, burglary and multiple murders, all occurring over 2-3 days. I lost track due to fast moving events in the story. Oh my, not another murder! Gasp! I was provided this audiobook in order to provide an honest review. Definitely a great listen!

Amy Brewster, Detective at Large

What a greatly entertaining book! If you love Detective Noir, give this book a listen.

Amy Brewster is a large, foul-tempered woman with a cigar and gin habit, but she is one of the most brilliant characters I have encountered in a book. Sharp tongued and even sharper witted, nothing gets past this behemoth of a woman.

Chris Horton is a mild-mannered banker, always doing what is right. When he finds out that he isn't going to die from a heart condition, he starts realizing that life has been passing him by while he waited to die. Little does he know that his life is about to be turned upside down when he buys a pair of rare paperweights for his fiancée, Julie.

This story is full of twists, a little bit of history, a deranged grandmother who only speaks French, a couple of conniving "friends", and Chris' encounter with a truly pure soul in Rhoda Dumont. There is plenty of humor, some close encounters with foul play, and loads of detecting in this book and it is a true enjoyment all around.

The narrator, Janelle Bigham, does a fantastic job and really adds a lot to the enjoyment of the book.

I was given the opportunity to listen to this book by the publisher and I chose to review it.

A female Nero Wolfe is a perfect description for Amy Brewster

There are so many adverb that describe Amy Brewster odd, quirky, intelligent, strange, on top of things, clueless ET see as a matter of fact I think you can use every one to describe Amy Brewster. Although two was the song from her high-profile family but being quirky and an odd ball and not so attractive she for just her own way in life solving mysteries tending to her flowers and all the boring things like that. I love Nero Wolf and now I love Amy Brewster the female version.

Amy Brewster at her best

A Knife in My Back by Sam Merwin Jr is a detective noir set in the 1940. Amy Brewster is described as a female Nero Wolfe, and as a quick witted and smart woman, she doesn’t need any Archie Goodwin. She solves a case involving a murder, stolen paperweights and long lost treasure. The narration by Janelle Bigham is great. She brings the story and characters to life.
