Acerca de esta escucha

In 1939, tiny Finland waged war - the kind of war that spawns legends - against the mighty Soviet Union, and yet, their epic struggle has been largely ignored. Guerrillas on skis, heroic single-handed attacks on tanks, unfathomable endurance, and the charismatic leadership of one of this century's true military geniuses - these are the elements of both the Finnish victory and a gripping tale of war.

you get every detail of the war and it is truely inspirational. Finland has more balls than most countries.

incredible story.

A little too emotional for my taste, the book accurately covers the war as well as all its context. Even though Trotter states at the end that the Finns were the only Baltic nation that kept independence after wwii due to fighting, his attitude towards going into war with Russians and towards Stalin is sometimes strangely ambiguous.

Slightly superfluous, yet coherent account of the war.

Great book but the narration can be a little over dramatic. Book had great larger political perspective but also great on the ground perspectives. The recording says it’s unabridged but it is missing a section on the Simo Häyhä which is in the book

Excellent

Loved it! What an epic! Those poor Soviets. Those Daring Finns! Would have liked to learn more about the sniper tactics employed but the mottis and ski info was amazing to hear about. might have to give this one a second listen.

Exceptional Detailed History

So much more than I had ever learned. should be required reading in high school.

An amazing history!

This was the most informative, accurate retelling of the events preceding the major outbreak of the Second World War in which the tiny Finland defended herself against the enormity of the Red Army for 100 plus days. The professionalism of the Finnish leadership and the individual bravery of the Finnish troops is explained in heartbreaking detail and the failings that would lead to the early collapse of the western half of the Soviet Union under Nazi invasion are also visited. The performance is excellent. Matthew Lloyd Davis does a masterful job! An all around great story and valuable historical account.

A little known, short lived epic!

The narrator did an excellent job with the book.

the book is definitely from the perspective of the Finnish, but still an exceptional view into this nugget of history. Oddly enough, I started this a couple months before the Ukraine crisis, and the parallels were striking.

great narration of a great story

The The speaker really brought such an unfortunate event to life

It kept the listener spellbound throughout the entire narration!

Great Naration

I wasn't sure 3 months worth of soldiers skiing around would be worth 11+ hours of listening, but I was pulled in in the first 15-20 minutes and it never let up. What the Finns did with basically nothing but submachine guns, knives, molotov cocktails, tactics and mostly GUTS, should be and still is taught in military colleges all over the world. I know now why the Soviets were so ready for, and won, Stalingrad. They did everything wrong in Finland, and learned from that to do everything right in Stalingrad.

Well worth the time, and more.

Captivating
