Acerca de esta escucha
This groundbreaking new recording performed by just two actors uses cutting-edge binaural sound to create the illusion of a full cast.
Nora seems to have it all – a loving husband, children and a comfortable life. But when a secret from her past threatens her carefully constructed world, she is forced to confront the stark realities of her marriage and the issues of her gender in society. The recording is followed by a fascinating conversation in which the actors talk how powerful and relevant the play still is today and how this unique project came to be. Exclusively for Audible the interview is followed by reviews of A Doll’s House, written between 1879 and 1900.
Alison Larkin is the multi award-winning narrator of over 250 audiobooks, including The Complete Novels of Jane Austen. Andrew Wincott is also an A-list narrator and actor who recently won a BAFTA award for his role as Rafael in the hit video game, Baldur’s Gate 3 and is perhaps most famous for his role of Adam in The Archers on BBC Radio.

With a little help from state-of-the-art production techniques and veteran acting talents, narrators Alison Larkin and Andrew Wincott give voice to nine characters and create the energy, intimacy, and acoustics of live theater in their presentation of Henrik Ibsen's 1879 groundbreaking masterwork about a woman's personal and economic awakening. At first, the world seems easy and bright with wife Nora's playful banter and husband Torvald's teasing, but when an old friend arrives and an intimate secret is about to be exposed, Nora must make a fateful decision. The choice to have only two actors playing all the parts works seamlessly, and Larkin nails the emotions of a wife who is telling her husband she can no longer be treated like a toy in a doll's house.
Classic theater indeed. B.P. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine [Published: DECEMBER 2024]

A stunning new production
This production of A Doll's House had me truly gripped from the start. I know Andrew Wincott from The Archers on BBC radio where he has played Adam for years - I'm a fan - and I have long been a fan of Alison Larkin's Jane Austen narration. I also absolutely loved her narration of The Secret Garden and Jane Eyre, which I came to after listening to her own novel The English American, which, as a fellow Brit living in America AND an adoptee I appreciated on every level.
So when I saw this come up on Audible I bought it immediately. I hadn't read the play since school and hearing it performed by two actors of this calibre was nothing short of mesmerizing. It is hard to believe it really is just two actors! And the story is as relevant today as it ever was. It's about gender roles and a woman's place in society. Nora was way ahead of her time.
The scene when Alison Larkin plays Nora and Mrs Linde - it's hard to believe it's the same woman talking to herself! And Wincott's dexterity, moving from the doctor to the lawyer and then back to Torvald is equally impressive. The chemistry between the two actors is electric.
I also greatly enjoyed the conversation between Larkin and Wincott at the end. Turns out they met a drama school in London! They were hilarious together - and fascinating when talking about their process. They've had similar careers on different sides of the Atlantic.
This is a very special audio experience. I plan to tell everyone i know about it. If I could give it more than five stars, I would. Bravo. And Encore!
