Audiobook narrated by Jacinda Ardern.

What if we could redefine leadership? What if kindness came first? Jacinda Ardern grew up the daughter of a police officer in small-town New Zealand, but as the 40th Prime Minister of her country, she commanded global respect for her empathetic leadership that put people first. This is the remarkable story of how a Mormon girl plagued by self-doubt made political history and changed our assumptions of what a global leader can be.

When Jacinda Ardern became Prime Minister at age thirty-seven, the world took notice. But it was her compassionate yet powerful response to the 2019 Christchurch mosque attacks, resulting in swift and sweeping gun control laws, that demonstrated her remarkable leadership. She guided her country through unprecedented challenges-a volcanic eruption, a major biosecurity incursion, and a global pandemic-while advancing visionary new polices to address climate change, reduce child poverty, and secure historic international trade deals. She did all this while juggling first-time motherhood in the public eye.

Ardern exemplifies a new kind of leadership-proving that leaders can be caring, empathetic, and effective. She has become a global icon, and now she is ready to share her story, from the struggles to the surprises, including for the first time the full details of her decision to step down during her sixth year as Prime Minister.

Through her personal experiences and reflections, Jacinda is a model for anyone who has ever doubted themselves, or has aspired to lead with compassion, conviction, and courage. A Different Kind of Power is more than a political memoir; it's an insight into how it feels to lead, ultimately asking: What if you, too, are capable of more than you ever imagined?©2025 Jacinda Ardern (P)2025 Penguin Random House New Zealand Audio

Jacinda Ardern’s A Different Kind of Power is part memoir, part masterclass in compassionate leadership, and surprisingly easy to read for a book by a former prime minister. With warmth, humour, and honesty, she shares what it was really like to lead New Zealand through some of its hardest moments – and still get dinner on the table.

From the heartbreak of Christchurch to the chaos of COVID-19, Ardern reflects on how empathy and clarity guided her decisions. But this isn’t just a list of political wins. It’s full of real moments – awkward ones, funny ones, human ones – that show how leadership doesn’t have to mean shouting the loudest or pretending to have all the answers.

New Zealanders will recognise her voice straight away: steady, thoughtful, and quietly determined. This book makes it clear why so many people around the world admired her. It’s also a reminder of how lucky we were to have someone at the helm who led with heart, stayed grounded, and never lost her sense of humour.

Whether you’re into politics or not, this book has something to say about being brave, being kind, and being yourself. And honestly, we’re pretty grateful she was exactly that.

A great listen - warm, funny and smart .

As a traditional National voter Jacinda Ardern moved me to vote Labour. As a teen Mother this book has removed any guilt or regrets that I now see all Mothers put on themselves.
A truly transformative book.

At last I had the opportunity to hear Jacinda’s story. So many times I had wondered what she was feeling about the way she was treated. She was such an amazing person to lead us through the pandemic and her commitment to us NZers was unmatched by any other world leader. I am so grateful for her courage and determination to keep us safe. Her book has given us the inside story behind her experiences as a Prime Minister during incredibly challenging times. Her honesty and integrity shine through the entire book. I highly recommend it.

Honesty, Integrity. Sincerity.

I Really enjoyed the fact that Jacinda Ardern read the book herself because it was just like her telling us her life story and the reason she became the kind of politician she did. I found some of the detail of her early life less interesting but at the same time it showed us why she became who she did and the values she brought. It was a great insight into the process of becoming a political leader and the Prime Minister of country, with all its challenges, as a woman and as a mother of a young baby and child. It has given me new hope that it is possible to be a woman and a leader and not take on the stereotypical aggressive characteristic that all those children in the schools thought defined politicians.

A must listen for all the women and men who want to lead with kindness

Jacinda made me proud to be a New Zealander every day that she was in office and it was great to hear her tell her own story

Sadly I knew from the start that she would only be in office as long as the elites let her stay there and I look forward to her prospering in new roles and continuing the good fight

Thank you Jacinda
