Novels are great. I’ve written several. But short stories are handy when you want something to distract you while you’re sitting in the dentist’s. Or you’re waiting for your bread to bake. Or you’re hanging around at the railway station and your train is late.

In situations like this you don’t want a book. You need something short, sharp and satisfying with a start, middle and end.

I suppose a collection of short stories could be compared to a box of chocolates. Some are creamy, others hard-centred – and some are decidedly nutty.
