Resumen del Editor

Emmy Award-winning news anchor and New York Times best-selling author Chris Hayes argues that there are really two Americas: a Colony and a Nation. America likes to tell itself that it inhabits a postracial world, but nearly every empirical measure - wealth, unemployment, incarceration, school segregation - reveals that racial inequality hasn't improved since 1968. With the clarity and originality that distinguished his prescient best seller Twilight of the Elites ("a stunning polemic," said Ta-Nehisi Coates), award-winning journalist Chris Hayes offers a powerful new framework in which to understand our current crisis. Hayes contends our country has fractured in two: the Colony and the Nation. In the Nation, we venerate the law. In the Colony, we obsess over order, fear trumps civil rights, and aggressive policing resembles occupation. How and why did Americans build a system where conditions in Ferguson and West Baltimore mirror those that sparked the American Revolution?

Blending wide-ranging historical research with political, social, and economic analysis, A Colony in a Nation explains how a Nation founded on justice constructed the Colony - and how it threatens our democracy.

brilliantly written.

I loved how he was able to connected the dots between the past colonial rule with the present and it's eye opening. I'm a huge fan of Chris Hayes and his passion and brilliance comes through in this book. His coverage and analysis of the events in Ferguson and the death of Michael Brown, Freddy Gray, Tamir Rice is spectacular.

Story that needs more attention

Any additional comments?

I'm an admirer of Chris Hayes. Really appreciated the work reporters like Hayes, Ryan Reilly, & Wes Lowery did in Ferguson. Hayes ' colony v. nation is an effective framework for the contrasts of the 2 Americas that co exist. His colonial history was informative as well. Since I watch his show regularly, I was attuned to his narration. The words sounded like him so I was glad the voice was him. I wish the topic of order/disorder got more exposure.

Enlightening...Superb analysis

Gripping analysis of social/political phenomena contributing to the racial, economic, and political divide in America.

Big fan of CH. Empathetic and we'll read.

Great insight and great observations. I enjoyed the story from start to finish. Puts lots of the subject in perspective.

An interesting read

Hayes looks at a society that is America. A society whose racism has created a society within a society. Thought provoking.

Satisfying

Thoughtful, informative and excellently written. Rich with data, anecdotes and a solid analogy that tied his insights together cohesively. Hayes masterfully included a range of intersecting social issues making the book impressively universal while specific. This versatility seems to come from the author's thorough knowledge of the subject. His delivery was enjoyable too.

Hays Calls It Like he Wishes to See It

Thanks Chris for processing privilege right in front of us and ask the question. “What will liberty cost is?” We have to live in the question, admit our efforts fall well short and engage democracy as an honest process that yields what have put into it. Lassitude and ignorance in, corruption and racism out. Integrity and virtue in, redemption and reparations may start to come out. A powerful thesis furled out for our consideration.

Revealing!

A perspective that needs to be told. Unfortunately, it will only reach those of us who care about racial equality already.
