Jesse James has learned never to rely on the men in her life. When the going gets tough, they're sure to leave. Just like the grandfather she never knew. But now her grandfather is back--if the man who knocked on her door is who he claims to be.

He's a down-and-out conman, a liar, and a thief, but he needs Jesse's help. "Gramps" has swindled a dangerous man and is in hiding for his life. Against her better judgment, Jesse allows herself to get involved. But once the man who claims to be her relative is safe, Jesse herself becomes the target of a vicious, cold-blooded rage …

This vibrant, traditional mystery is loaded with a wild assortment of interesting characters. The narrator does a great job bringing the story to life.

I enjoyed this one. Introducing a new old guy who might be Jessica’s grandfather was a smart twist and helped add layers of uncertainty and possible deception the colors the book with a paranoia renewing the sense of investigation. Flamingo was much more refreshingly direction for the character and her group , the Jessica James mystery books are nicely character based but had felt to me a little stagnant after the last book. The personality, characters, and uncertainty are highlights but there are elements that are becoming a little stretched like the guy who has a bunch of money serving as a dues ex machina plot device by virtue of resources and connections. The journey here was good but it felt like it ended in an ‘it had to end somehow’ style twister. Overall this installment was a strong entry in a good series that I hope to see more of.
