2078: THE FALL by J. Spencer is an exciting, apocalyptic adventure that pulls you in from the very first chapter. The story follows a family navigating a perilous new world in the near future, and most of the journey is told through the eyes of James—a young man who was likely just getting his footing in life before civilization collapsed. His perspective gives the book a grounded, authentic feel. The author balances high-stakes tension with a wonderfully wry sense of humor, which makes the danger feel even more real and the characters even more human. Along the way we meet people who embody both the best and worst of humanity—kind, decent survivors and others who are undeniably depraved and violent.
Ray Greenley’s narration is phenomenal. He gives James a voice that is convincingly youthful—skilled and capable, yet still prone to the mistakes and impulses of a young man. Greenley captures the humor perfectly and makes James a lovable goof who grows and matures as the story unfolds. His range is impressive: the commanding, booming voices of authority figures, the distinct personalities of the supporting cast, and the believable portrayal of female characters all elevate the experience.
A riveting story with great narration. Highly recommended.
