Cody returns to his new mountain home, a rundown miner's cabin in Grizzly Flats miles from Sacramento. Nested amid the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Grizzly Flats offers wilderness to roam and plenty of game to hunt, plus farms and small towns within a day's ride where Cody can buy or barter for supplies as needed. It's also not far from the J&C Winery run by Cody's partner Joseph Sutter. Joseph has a good head for business, but occasionally problems arise that require Cody's special brand of action.

Fixing up his homestead and exploring his domain keep Cody plenty busy, but he used to the risks of a mountain man's existence. Then a violent assault in the frozen wilderness leaves him responsible for two children, Jake and Emily. Surviving the winter will be tough enough, but the outlaw who killed the children's parents is still around, hunting the sole witnesses to his crime. Cody must protect the children, whatever the cost.
