It is 1953. A new world order is in place. Dwight D. Eisenhower is president of the United States. Queen Elizabeth II is on the English Throne. Uncle Joe Stalin is dead, and the Russians have the atomic bomb. In Washington DC, Senator Joe McCarthy is terrorising government agencies with his Communist witch hunts. The whole country is in the grip of cold war paranoia. Fear levels are at an all-time high. Bombs could start falling at any moment. People harbour the gloomy suspicion that the end of the world is near. Communism and McCarthy aren't President Eisenhower's only problems. He's under attack for being too chummy with big business. To counter these charges, Eisenhower appoints left-wing Noel Grace to head the Federal Power Commission. Texas oil and gas interests are outraged. They organise a smear campaign against Grace fronted by their man in Washington, Senator Dillard Johns. Eisenhower learns about the plot and decides to do a little smearing of his own. He enlists the help of The Washington Post. A reporter is sent to Texas to investigate Johns's disputed first senate race in 1941. What this young reporter uncovers is much darker than a stolen election.. It is a story of blackmail and murder that eventually leads to a small Texas town and the final horror buried there.
