Crescencio "Chenco" Ortiz pulled himself up by his garter straps after his father's will yanked the financial rug from under his spank-me pumps. He doesn't need anyone, yet when Steve Vance steps into his life, the prospect of having a sexy leather daddy on tap begins to take on a certain appeal.
There's a hitch when he learns Steve is friends with Mitch Tedsoe—the half-brother Chenco never knew except through his father's twisted lies. Despite his reservations, soon Chenco is living his dreams, including a performing gig in Vegas. Now if only he could get Steve to see him as more than just a boy in need of saving.
Steve's attraction to Chenco is overshadowed by too many demons, ones he knows his would-be lover is too young to slay. Yet as he gets to know the bright, determined young man whose drag act redefines fierce, Steve's inner sadist trembles with need. He begins to realize Chenco's relentless tough love might be the only thing that will finally set him free.
Warning: This story contains glamorous drag queens, exhibitionist secondary characters, and no-holds-barred BDSM play, including watersports. Listeners are advised they may well leave this novel feeling uncharacteristically fierce.

I am not a huge fan of Queen's in my MM fiction - okay, that isn't totally true, but it is true that Queen's in particular, in MM fiction, are an easy stereotype to camp up in an almost cartoonish way and exploit for the sake of "story-telling". They are the bitchy best friend who delivers the zinger one-liners. Not so in this book. As with many other less than conventional behaviors, Cullinan explores Chenco and his Drag Queen alter-ego Caramela in a real, honest and humane way. No cartoonish stereotyping, not easy go-to gags. Chenco comes across as a real person who has some real issue's and is struggling to find a balance with his own kinks.
The SM in BDSM features far more heavily in this book than in previous books, and it is a bit ... unsettling, squicky, ??? ... the idea that Chenco is half-brothers with Mitch, who we know intimately from previous books - and knowing that Chenco's romance and kink exploration are going on in proximity with Mitch and his sexual world - but the incest fantasy/line is never crossed and it never gets unsettling or squicky or ??? in that direction, though it always sort of stands in the corner as a disturbing possibility. I can deal with a lot of kink and non-convention, but that one is a hard limit for me - and thankfully it was never crossed.
Instead, H.C. succeeds in pushing the hot and steamy, the gooey romance and the heart-tugging family building to the extreme and leaves us feeling good about where this series has traveled and finally landed at.
Drag your heart to the finish line.

Writing styles have changed over the years and I was pleasantly surprised to find, that despite having a release date of 2016 her writing style doesn't contain all the dialog tags (he said / she said) that were common during the last decade.
📖 Story comment: good pace, interesting characters, complicated plot .
For me, Chenco and his alter-ego Caramela are really well written. Caramella feels like Chenco's protector and the personality that comes out when Chenco is most vulnerable. I loved that Chenco comes across as a real person who has real issue's and is struggling to find a balance with his own needs.
I didn't mind Steve's character, but I wasn't a fan of the Steve / Gordy storyline - I needed to keep reminding myself this was written in 2016 and our understanding and acceptance of mental illness was very different to now. I also feel like the Dom/sub element of this one wasn't as well written or feel as natural as the 2 other books - it all felt a little too "instant" to be so hard-core for a newbie like Chenco.
🎧 Narrator comment: Iggy Toma was a good choice for this series, he suits the characters. has good cadence, inflections and intonations and it's easy to distinguish the characters from each other. Most importantly the characters are consistent from the other books - overall an enjoyable performance and he bought Double Blind to life.

[Note to self: the kink in this pushes my "easy going acceptance" of the lifestyle (the golden shower and needle play was too much for me)
