The Cardiff Road Winery at Martinborough is now well established as the matriarch, Celia Stewart focuses on the development of the winery as a wedding and conference centre in an effort to keep herself busy even though it’s been five years since the death of her husband, Murray. She buys the aged hotel in nearby Kohatuiti, a grand old lady of a building and moves it to the winery to bring back to its former glory. Daughters, Gina, and Deb support her but become increasingly worried about her state of mind as age and hard work takes its toll.
It’s Gina who’s still on her own, that is until she meets Neil Havelock, a former navy diver who’s at a crossroads in life, but Gina remains cautious as her past has left her insecure and scared of a stable relationship.
Life’s plans for the family start to crumble when they learn of third and eldest sister Annette leaving her husband, Spencer amidst claims of adultery. Cracks eventually emerge in her story and a later conversation with Spencer reveals the truth about Annette’s insatiable appetite for other men and her deviant sexual behaviours.
In Oxford, the English side of the family is rocked when patriarch Tony Dalgleish dies leaving his fortune including a chain of book shops to his son, Mason, virtually leaving his daughter, Hayley, out of the will. This reignites a decades old bitter rivalry between the siblings where Mason is hell bent on destroying Hayley and her publishing business, Wallingford-Hall to completely take over the entire family empire. The rivalry reaches a crescendo when Hayley is on the ropes and her fate is sealed, but then an unexpected turn from a deed made and forgotten about by her a decade earlier becomes a reality, but is it enough to save her and the Wallingford-Hall Press?
In an effort to get away, Hayley travels to New Zealand on the invitation of the official opening of the Cardiff Road Wedding and Conference Centre and hears about Gina and Neil and how they plan on having a family. Gina, unable to have a child approaches Hayley to act as a surrogate and eventually Hayley agrees but insisting she carries the baby in England and with Gina and Neil in New Zealand, problems arise. As they travel to England to be with Hayley, Annette takes the opportunity to move into the refurbished hotel with those who seek to exploit the opportunity for their sex games. It is here that Annette cements her friendship with Simeon Wilcox who is keen to take the games to a whole new level until one of the young girls involved needs critical medical assistance.
Seeing the settled life Deb has, and against all odds, Gina is carving out for herself, Annette is envious and when that is threatened by Gina’s past catching up with her in the form of her abuser being released from prison, Annette makes a decision which sends her into exile, away from the family she so much wants to be a part of and catapults her towards a life of loneliness and regret which has only one remedy.
This is the seventh book in the series ‘The Colour of Our Country and continues to follow the fortunes and otherwise of the Dalgleish’s, and the Stewarts as the next generation bring in their own values and relationships to solve problems their way, regardless of the consequences.
