So this is one of the few Alexandria House books that isn't a universal five for me. I loved the book and narration, but a number of things rubbed me the wrong way and I hope these are issues she rectifies in the future with her writing(even though she's my most read author and I love her writing style, so it's nothing against her actual writing style or editing).

This book introduces a second chance-type romance about two 41-year-olds who reconnect at a high school reunion. They both come from trauma(the heroine has been married twice; her first husband was about 20 years her senior at age 20ish and her one true love died on her and her second husband was trash but someone she married to take care of her because she decided never to marry for love again. the hero was physically abused by his dad and forced black toxic masculinty down his throat so even though he had a loving mother, his father fought them and refused them comfort because they'd "need" ot as black boys growing into black men).

I think I liked that the drama had a lot to do with the heroine's grown daughter(she was a young mother who eventually became a young grandmother) was one of her toxic family members. It's easy to paint parents as toxic(as I am a person who grew up with toxic parents) but self absorbed kids can be too. Her daughter was selfish like her father and expected her to "fire" a better employee just because she was an ex of her current man!

It was typical Alex House drama but there were four issues I didn't give it a five:

~The hero never addressed his trauma; in fact he was a father himself but was 100% ok with not being in his kid's life because he didn't want to be like his father! So unlike the past heroes of Alex House's works!
~The anti-Asian way of describing Set and his brothers features. I could have ignored it once, but many times in the book there was a lot of strange, racist ways to describe they had smaller set, lack of a double epicanthal fold in their eyes. Instead of using racist, tired slurs to describe that, I wish people had compared it to the many cultures in West Africa where that is a common feature. While I've seen it in mainly Senegalese and Ghanian folk, Malians, Gambians, amongst other West African people have that trait. Are we so uneducated on the nuance of African features that we don't know this??? Is it so bad to be compared to the people we're literally descendants of????
~Speaking of West Africa, while it is unique that all the brothers have God-like names, I wonder why none of them are West African gods? Two are Egyptian, and we can despite who was the first occupants and who currently occupies it all day, but are West African god names unappealing or something?
~It was short. Two and a half hours. It left little time to get to know them and I'm used to reading her 5+ hours books and feeling like I wanted more.

But on to the positive!

~The heroine wasn't a baddie or overly curvaceous. Even though I am that, I want to validate women who aren't that and stop feeding this narrative that there's a certain Black girl body.
~The heroine was a sq*$^ter! So much romance ignores this because culture shames it, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a character who did it that I didn't know about and her man loved it! Yeah sex posivity!
~They were both 41. Don't get me wrong, I love her typical age gaps(or at least my faves are age gap) but I loved that they were the same age and over 30! I'm about to be 35 so I'm glad romance doesn't stop at 29 like typical romance.

Overall I look forward to the next books and am a proud Alexandria House fan!

Short but sweet...

This is the type of book that could go on for years; Telling the story of their lives until they are old and grey. This is the second time I’m listening to this book and it’s better than television.

I love everything about this book

Alexandria House writes men you can’t get enough of and wish were yours! I love her writing style! She’s such an extremely talented storyteller with the best characters that you feel like you know personally when you’re done with her books! Then get The ridiculously talented Jakobi Diem and Wesleigh Siobhan to narrate the books and you have audio gold!

This book will give you an eargasm!
