Eighteen years ago, Henry Asquith, Duke of Avesbury had to leave his kept lover, Kit Redford, in order to devote himself to raising his young family. Now, a lifetime later, his children are moving on and, for the first time in years, Henry is alone.
During a rare visit to London, Henry unexpectedly happens upon an old friend of Kit’s and learns that Kit did not receive the financial pay off he was entitled to when Henry left him. Instead, Kit was thrown out of his home and left destitute. Horrified, Henry begs Kit to see him and allow Henry to compensate him. But Kit, who now owns a discreet club for gentlemen of a certain persuasion, neither needs nor wants Henry’s money.
“Perhaps you should earn the money you owe me the way I had to earn it? On your knees, and on your back, taking my cock like a whore.”
Kit thought he had put his old hurts and grievances about Henry behind him, but when he sees Henry again, he discovers that, not only is the old pain still there, so is the fierce attraction that once burned between them. When, in a moment of fury, Kit demands a scandalous form of penance from Henry, no one is more surprised than Kit when Henry agrees to pay it. As Kit and Henry spend more time together, they learn more about the men they have become, and about the secret feelings and desires they concealed from one another in the past. Henry realises he wants to build a future with Kit, but can he persuade his wary lover to trust him ever again? And can two men from such different worlds make a new life together?

Simon Goldhill is perfect for this narration, his smooth, flexible voice easily giving characters their unique characterizations and making friends of them. When an audio book actually elevates the story with the vocal nuances of the performer, it’s a great experience – and this is one of those books.

From the synopsis, I was actually expecting more drama and was pleasantly surprised that Henry and Kit's more mature years mapped onto their personalities and attitudes. They are both older and wiser, and apart from a couple of rash moments, they actually take the time to talk things out and try to repair the misunderstandings of the past.
Overall, this was a gentle historical read, with an extremely soothing narration style, so I plan to revisit this again, possibly soon! (I'm also intrigued about Henry's son George's story, and it seems like it was being set up at the end . . . definitely would read a book about him, just sayin'.)

This is both my first book by this author and my first time listening to this narrator. I thought Simon Goldhill did a great job bringing these characters and this story to life. I liked his tone of voice and was able to tell the characters apart.

Audio: 4.5⭐️
This is a very enjoyable story. It takes a while to establish what‘s happening in each man’s life, including the secondary plot lines. They take up space that makes one resolution feel a bit rushed, but given the situations, historical context, and intensity between the MCs, it didn’t bother me overmuch. While I was surprised by how Kit’s proposal for Henry to pay him back turned out, it's true to the characters.
Henry dedicated himself to fatherhood and doesn’t know who he is as a man. He’s constantly at war with his youngest son, kept at a distance by his oldest son, and managed by his daughter. He becomes more desolate after learning Kit’s settlement was stolen, leaving him exposed to cruelty. Henry treated Kit with respect and care so Henry’s abandonment was shocking and painful. However, Kit’s resilience and intelligence helped him build a successful business and a small family.
Henry’s sudden reappearance and penitence unlocks a surprising wealth of bitterness and pain. However, Kit's scornful demand makes Henry feel alive and awakens unknown desires. Their bittersweet passion makes Henry desperate to get to know Kit, but the man is resistant. Henry realizes that no matter how much they talked or shared, there were limits to Kit’s freedom of expression. For his part, Kit sees no value in sharing his history. He tries to be pragmatic but can’t turn away from Henry’s forthright desire to understand him nor Kit’s unexpected desire to connect as equals.
For all the sorrow, regret, and anger, the story is very tender. The depth of their feeling gives a solid foundation for the quickness of their re-connection, but it’s their respective changes that makes it relatively believable. Their maturity gives them the certainty, openness, and frankness they need to have a future.
Simon Goldhill captures all the emotion and Henry and Kit’s voices very well. Henry’s self-possessed, soft-spoken and earnest nature are especially spot on. He also conveys Henry’s grief and horror without it feeling overly dramatic. Kit’s kindness, cheek, and tumultuous feelings are great, and Goldhill’s character voices overall fit well, particularly Sharp’s slightly menacing, flirtatious, and unpredictable energy. The story pulls on the heartstrings and Goldhill delivers it wonderfully.
