DCI Sally Yates has been chosen to lead a new task force focusing on human trafficking. Her instructions are to concentrate on the cartels who routinely import children into the UK. These children are abused by those paying for the trade, and when they are used up, physically and mentally, they are cast aside and left to roam the streets in a never-ending tide of human misery.
Yates and her partner, Sergeant Andy Dawson, think they are prepared for the task ahead, but in truth, nothing could have prepared them for the devastation caused by the cartels. They quickly discover an organization called “The Furnizorii,” a Romanian word that loosely translates to “The Providers.” This cartel dominates the child trafficking trade in Europe. Run by a sociopath, the cartel uses fear and blackmail to control its network, one that has police officers, customs officials, magistrates, and MPs within it. As Yates and Dawson start their investigation, they realize that the cartels have protectors in high places. People who are part of Britain’s ruling elite and have everything to lose should their involvement in this awful business become known.
As the investigation gathers momentum and the morass gets deeper and deeper, Yates and Dawson find out just how far these people will go to protect themselves and, by default, the cartel. This includes implicating her in a bribery scandal, kidnapping members of her team, and even killing police officers if the situation calls for it. Finding themselves caught up in this vortex of criminality places enormous strains on the entire team. DCI Yates, as is always the case, leads from the front, but this has its own perils as she tracks down the aristocrat in the shadows who controls the entire cartel.
