The story describes a dystopian world in which the vampires have emerged from the shadows and taken control of the human race. Humans are reduced to the status of farm animals and forced to give up their blood to their masters on demand.
However, a a group of human resistance fighters have arisen - the Sons Of Man - determined to regain their lost freedom. And in their struggle they have the use of unearthly weapons-for they have discovered that there is a third race involved in the struggle, a race the vampires are afraid of - The Old Gods.

The story is told through the eyes of two main protagonists: a vampire who used to be a man, and a female warrior who is one of the ruling vampire elite.
Each has a sibling whom they must either enlist or defeat.
