“Doctor Landry. I see that my mother gave you the access code for my apartment.”
The slight shuffling confirmed her presence, and he braced, schooling his features before swiveling his chair to face her.
As always, it was like a punch in the gut. Sasha looked like she’d been swept by the wind, her golden blonde hair beautifully tangled. Her skin was still sun-kissed from wherever godforsaken country she’d been in, and her eyes sparkled, reminding him of the early morning sky. It was how they shone brightly at him, with piercing intelligence, not missing anything.
However, it was his body that remembered her even better, how she’d felt for that brief moment, pressed against the wall, his hands filled with her curves.
“It wasn’t as if I had to work hard for it, especially since she wanted me to talk to you.”
From experience he knew his mother wasn’t a meddler but a worrier, and that meant if she wasn’t getting her message across the normal way, other avenues would be considered. “So you’re here as a messenger. Let me be blunt. There’s nothing to worry about. Tell my mum I sleep and eat properly, and no, I don’t work too much. If that information comes from you, my mother will be convinced.”
When she crossed her arms in what Lazarus considered her doctor pose, it was clear that the woman wasn’t in an accommodating mood.
“Forgive me, but I’m the kind of woman who’s reassured by facts and observation, and from what I’ve seen so far, I’m not. I won’t tell your mother lies.”
His next words hissed through a clenched jaw. “I’m not lying to my mother!”
Sasha’s stance softened. “I think you want to protect her. You don’t outright lie but you avoid answering her questions. I think you do indeed sleep and eat, but Elizabeth might be inquiring if you eat nutritious food, sleep well, and aren’t being devoured with stress and the idea of putting your father in jail.”
A deep breath helped him relax instead of snapping at her again. “Switch jail for a coffin, and I’d be the happiest man on earth.”
Wariness flew over her beautiful features before returning to business. “As you’re planning his murder, I think it’s the perfect moment to talk to you about something.”
“If you’re here to renegotiate the protection plan, I fear you’ll be disappointed. Unless you have something else in mind.” He hoped not, as he didn’t know how to talk about what had happened between them in her room.
