I thought I knew what grief was until my husband took his own life, leaving me with all his debts and shattered dreams. Our marriage may have been just a piece of paper, but his loss is still heart-shattering. He was my best friend, and all I have left is Pinky, my enormous Pitbull Mastiff, to keep me going through the pain. Together, we navigate this new life, finding unexpected comfort in Sebastian, our next-door neighbor, and his brother. They’re everything I never knew I needed, even if they do happen to be the mafia.
As I uncover the dark truths about my husband's death, I find that the same shadows that haunted him are now closing in on me. Can love and hope save us from the darkness, or will the sins of the past consume us all?
This is a dark romance book with HEAVY triggers. Listener's discretion is highly advised.

This book is a reverse harem where the MMC's are brothers who run an illegal gambling ring and a police officer.
This book had some twists. When I thought it would go one way, it went another way and I love that it wasn't predictable!
Sebastian is hilarious on pain meds and I loved the narrator of this book!
I love these main characters!!

Guarded Hearts by Emily Klepp was, unfortunately, a letdown for me as a why choose romance and even as a romance in general. The biggest issue is how surface-level everything feels the relationships, the emotions, the so-called “connection.” There’s no slow burn, no meaningful buildup, no emotional layering. The characters jump into relationships almost immediately without any real tension, conflict, or emotional resistance, which completely drains the story of impact. A why choose romance should make you feel the pull between multiple love interests, the internal struggle, the uncertainty, the jealousy but here it’s mostly missing. Instead of authentic emotional development, the romance feels rushed and convenient, like the characters are checking boxes instead of forming real bonds.
There’s also almost no angst, which is honestly baffling for a story that is supposed to revolve around guarded hearts and complicated love. Where’s the emotional push and pull? Where’s the heartbreak, the vulnerability, the inner conflict? Everything is too easy, too smooth, and too emotionally flat for a genre that thrives on tension. Even the intimate moments lack depth because the emotional foundation just isn’t there. Without emotional stakes, those scenes feel hollow rather than meaningful.
Another major issue is the lack of character development. The love interests blur together instead of standing apart as distinct, fully-formed individuals with unique dynamics with the main character. In a strong why choose story, each relationship should feel different, offering something emotionally and romantically unique. Here, the connections feel interchangeable and underdeveloped, which makes it hard to care about any of them.
To work as a true why choose romance, this story needed:
• Slower pacing in the relationships
• Stronger emotional conflicts
• More internal struggle and vulnerability
• Distinct romantic dynamics for each character
• Actual stakes and tension
Instead, it reads like a fast-tracked romance with little emotional payoff. If you’re looking for something light, low-drama, and easy, this might work for you. But if you want depth, longing, emotional intensity, and relationships that feel earned, this one falls very short.
I wanted a love story that made me feel something. Sadly, this one didn’t
A Duet is needed *Disappointed
