Resumen del Editor

Ragnarok burns on the horizon of an urban Nordic city in Midgard, and it's all because of Odin. The Lord of Fangs has ordered his bloodsucking descendants to attack cities all over the world. Though the urban setting is similar to cities on Earth, the magic & monsters are not a secret, and Midgard has its own set of rules.

Anyway, the power-hungry god must be stopped by a werewolf named Eldingar, who is Fenryr's chosen. First, however, the werewolf needs to gain allies. He finds one in an unusual vampire queen named Mia, currently a nurse in Wyrmbite City. Of course, he has to check that she doesn't agree with or worship Odin--something he does a bit too aggressively.

The werewolf knows that not all vampires worship Odin; she'll be an essential part of saving the world. After working out some 'minor' issues, the two set off to the city and recruit help. Mia's best friend, a prince named Rune, joins the party. Following this, a kitsune called Kaida signs onto the quest. Finally, a sorcerer named Atzi and a faerie named Thyra finish off our gathering of heroes. Each have valuable powers that will contribute to Midgard's salvation.

They're definitely going to need it. Not only must they deal with the power-hungry deity, but they'll cross claws with his chosen: Huginn and Muninn, among the most powerful vampires in Midgard. As their city comes under siege by Odin's cult, our heroes must put their heads and magic together to take this evil down or risk the innocent lives of countless people.

Author's Note:

Join this Urban Fantasy gothic adventure and enjoy LGBTQ+ romantic subplots with diverse adult characters. Not to mention, there are new flavors of vampire lore and new interpretations of the Nordic gods in this modern setting. The characters and world are saturated with magic that fantasy lovers will adore.

CAUTION: Graphic gore, very descriptive sex scenes (end of story), heavy violence, some profanity

Modernized Norse Mythology

Des M. Astor's audiobook "Claws of Midgard" invites listeners to immerse themselves in a world teetering on the precipice of Ragnarok, blending elements of urban fantasy, gothic horror, and LGBTQ+ romance. While it's a rare treat for an author to narrate their own work, in this case, it's a mixed blessing. Des M. Astor, a gifted writer, proves to be a competent but not exceptional narrator. Writing and acting are distinct skills, and while authors may intimately understand their characters' voices, translating that to captivate listeners with their own voice can prove challenging. The most successful audiobook narrators often employ diverse voices and accents to enhance the narrative, a skill that Des M. Astor occasionally falls short of.

"Claws of Midgard" unfolds in a unique urban Nordic city, Midgard, where the impending doom of Ragnarok looms large. This city, while similar in urban layout to our own, is home to a rich tapestry of magic, monsters, and mythological beings, all governed by their own set of enigmatic rules. At the heart of this chaos is Odin, the Lord of Fangs, who has commanded his bloodthirsty progeny to unleash vampiric havoc upon cities worldwide.

Enter Eldingar, a werewolf chosen by Fenrir himself, who embarks on a perilous mission to thwart Odin's malevolent machinations. To succeed, Eldingar must forge alliances with individuals who possess the power to counter the looming apocalypse. One such ally is the unconventional vampire queen, Mia, who currently masquerades as a nurse in Wyrmbite City. However, Eldingar's skepticism regarding Mia's loyalty to Odin initially creates friction, setting the stage for a complex and evolving relationship.

As the narrative unfolds, Eldingar assembles a motley crew of heroes, each possessing unique abilities crucial to Midgard's salvation. Mia's best friend, the enigmatic prince Rune, adds his strength to the group, while Kaida, a kitsune, and Atzi, a sorcerer, lend their formidable talents. The party's diversity is further enriched by the inclusion of Thyra, a faerie, whose powers add a layer of enchantment to their quest.

Their mission is not without its challenges. The group must confront Huginn and Muninn, Odin's chosen, two of the most powerful vampires in Midgard. As Odin's cult tightens its grip on the city, our heroes must pool their resources, magic, and ingenuity to defeat the looming threat and prevent countless innocent lives from being lost in the crossfire.

Des M. Astor's storytelling shines through in this urban fantasy odyssey, and he skillfully weaves LGBTQ+ romantic subplots into the narrative, featuring diverse and fully developed adult characters. The result is a tale that explores love, loyalty, and the power of unity amidst the chaos of an impending apocalypse. While "Claws of Midgard" doesn't shy away from graphic gore, explicit sex scenes (which are appropriately placed at the end of the story), heavy violence, and occasional profanity, these elements contribute to the raw intensity of the narrative rather than feeling gratuitous.

One of the most commendable aspects of Astor's work is the meticulous world-building. She crafts a meticulously detailed urban landscape steeped in darkness, a canvas upon which the characters' adventures unfold. Each character is brought to life with vivid descriptions, distinct personalities, and unique character designs that make them truly memorable. The relationships that develop among these characters are delicately untwined, revealing layers of complexity and nuance.

For fans of Norse mythology, "Claws of Midgard" offers a refreshing and inventive take on established lore. Astor's reinterpretations of figures such as Odin, Thor, Fenrir, and others inject fresh vitality into these iconic gods and creatures. It's evident that the author has a deep appreciation for mythological traditions and a talent for infusing them with contemporary relevance.

In summary, "Claws of Midgard" is a recommended read, particularly for enthusiasts of world mythos and dark urban fantasy-horror. It strikes a balance between captivating storytelling, intriguing character dynamics, and a richly imagined world that brims with magic and mystery. Astor's narrative serves as a testament to his storytelling prowess, offering a gripping and immersive experience that will leave listeners eagerly awaiting his next literary venture. If you're in search of a narrative that combines the allure of ancient mythology with the dark intrigue of urban fantasy, this audiobook delivers with just the right blend of bloodshed and drama to keep you hooked until the very end.

Like Mercy Thompson with a Nordic Twist

Great writing with the right amount of description. Narration is clear and the voice of Odin is chilling. These shifters are unique creatures and many have multiple forms, including Loki. Vampire Nurse, another vampire named Hemo Toxin, dragons, Fae that sit on your shoulder, and witches and werewolves. They drive cars, go to bars, and use cell phones. The author has created a unique world that straddles the mundane and the supernatural.

Amazing story… narration ruined it

I am so sad that the author decided to narrate their own book. It completely ruined it. It made me confused at who was speaking since she just read the words in her own voice. Meaning every character, interaction, fight scene, love scene, everything was read in one voice. I tried so very hard because I knew the story was great! But I kept having to rewind it. And just plain kept getting confused.

Author - I know you probably saved money to narrate your own book. However when people purchase an audiobook, they want the narrator to be part of the story. To give your writing LIFE. Please get a good female/male narrator duo and republish this book. Please!!!
