Crixus' ostensible modern counterpart, Laidlaw, assists clients in hunting African big game. Separated by vast gulfs of time, culture, and language, however, the similarity between the two men is more apparent than real. Yet, both remain brothers in that ancient fraternity of hunters, stretching backward into the mists of time, when men pursued the Colombian mammoth, aurochs, and wholly rhinoceros armed with nothing more than a primitive bow and rude spear.
