I'm all about spooky,
atmospheric, suspenseful entertainment as soon as the calendar flips to October. But despite the fact that Halloween is my favorite holiday, I'm a chicken. I'm the person who covers their eyes during horror movie previews. I refuse to visit any haunted house for any age group. And I've even stopped watching TV shows in the middle of the season after too many jump scares! Yet, at the same time, I love a good ghost story, and I'm always on the hunt for historical fiction about witches. (Witch Born was perfect for that!) This fall I'm trying not to give into my fearfulness, so I'm scouring my wishlist for a haunting tale to listen to next...as long as it won't give me nightmares.-

Forget the monsters you think you know
We all have preconceived notions when it comes to vampires or witches or zombies, which is exactly why reimagined versions can be so refreshing! Have you ever wondered about Dr. Frankenstein's teen years? What do you suppose life is like for a teenaged bruja in New York City? And how would you react to murderous mermaids?

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

This Book Changed My Entire Perspective

Award-winning book turned Oscar-worthy movie
When The Hate U Give, Angie Thomas's debut novel, came out in early 2017, it sparked difficult—and necessary—conversations about race, violence, and activism. This month, the movie is out and is sparking those conversations all over again. It's required listening for a reason, and narrator Bahni Turpin's performance is an in-house favorite

Historia
It happens every year. A list is posted, and one girl from each grade is chosen as the prettiest, and another is chosen as the ugliest. Nobody knows who makes the list. It almost doesn't matter. The damage is done the minute it goes up.This is the story of eight girls, freshman to senior, "pretty" and "ugly." And it's also the story of how we see ourselves, and how other people see us, and the tangled connection of the two.

It's cool to be kind
Whether in person or online, a staggering number of teens are bullied every day. To help raise awareness and give teens the tools to stop harassment, October is Bullying Prevention Month. Choose a story from either side of the fence—the bully or the bullied—and stand up for others with compassion and kindness.
