For the shortest
month of the year, February is surprisingly full of things to do, observe, and remember. Celebrations like the Grammys and the Academy Awards always remind me of all I need to see and listen to, and observations like Black History Month and Presidents' Day fuel my desire to learn. And let’s not forget the inescapable explosion of red and pink for Valentine’s Day! Because of all these, my nights and weekends are full of parties and poetry readings, classes and candy, museums and music. And at the end of every day I lie back exhausted, ready to unwind with a great audiobook.-

Black History Month
For Black History Month, I’ve been challenging myself to go beyond history and classics to find contemporary voices. Along the way I’ve been listening to new-to-me books and familiar favorites by authors like Tiffany D. Jackson, Jewell Parker Rhodes, and Jason Reynolds. Through their storytelling, I’m learning how to be a better ally, friend, and advocate.

On the Come Up
One of the most anticipated books of the year is finally here! Angie Thomas wowed us all with The Hate U Give, our 2017 Audiobook of the Year, and now she’s back with her sophomore effort, On the Come Up. Bri’s quest to become a celebrated rapper is challenged at every turn—she’s worried about her family’s overdue bills, racism at school, and living up to the reputation of her late father, a respected MC. Audible editor Katie recently talked to Angie Thomas about why she absolutely trusted narrator Bahni Turpin to do justice to the story (and all the rapping that was required!).

This is a story about two teens falling in love over a summer that throws everything possible to keep them apart. Max: Chill. Sports. Gay and not a big deal. And a secret: An encounter with an older kid that makes it hard to breathe, one that he doesn't want to think about, ever. Jordan: The opposite of chill. Poetry. His "wives" and the Chandler Mall. Never been kissed and searching for Mr. Right, who probably won't like him anyway. And a secret: A spiraling out of control mother, and the knowledge that he's the only one who can keep the family from falling apart.
