doing what I did this July. I went back to school! Buying school supplies for grad school was downright thrilling. The backpacks! The pens! The binders! Not much has changed since the days I dropped my hard-earned allowance on Lisa Frank folders, but I did try to mature my tastes a bit when selecting my materials. I know, I know. I have a little Hermione Granger in me—if I could be a perpetual student, I would. But the best part about grad school? All of the great books I get to devour. Care to join me?- Katie, Audible editor

I got the inside scoop
I know I’m going to like school if I get to keep listening to stories like Disappeared by Francisco X. Stork. It’s a haunting tale set in Juárez, Mexico—a city that has seen thousands of girls vanish over the years. After her best friend goes missing, journalist Sara, tries to help by writing about these women. When she starts receiving anonymous threats, it’s clear to her that she’s touching on some truths—and that her life is also in danger. Told from the alternating perspectives of Sara and her younger brother Emiliano (and a brilliant moment later in the novel when their points of view converge), Stork sheds new light on these horrifying disappearances, and his tale will stay with you long after the closing credits. I had the pleasure of seeing the author speak at my school; he was fascinating, self-deprecating, and clearly brilliant. And he let us in on a little secret—he just turned in a sequel to Disappeared to his editor.

The 10 (and 31) year old me are SO excited
I’m a millennial, so '90s nostalgia is a regularly experienced phenomenon for me. I first came to Ann M. Martin’s The Baby-Sitters Club through the '90s film, and I immediately rushed out to get the books. The entrepreneurial spirit of these girls sparked my love of the side hustle, which remains a key part of my DNA. Needless to say, I freaked out when I first learned that we were going to record the entire BSC series. I identify as a Kristy, so it just felt right to dive back into this series from the very beginning with Kristy’s Great Idea, performed by actress Elle Fanning. There are so many great ways to experience (or re-experience) this series, so my TBLT list is tied up for the foreseeable future.

Historia
Growing up in an affluent suburb of New York City, 16-year-old Nevaeh Levitz never thought much about her biracial roots. When her Black mom and Jewish dad split up, she relocates to her mom's family home in Harlem and is forced to confront her identity for the first time. Nevaeh wants to get to know her extended family, but because she inadvertently passes as white, her cousin thinks she's too privileged, pampered, and selfish to relate to the injustices African Americans face on a daily basis.

Mixed feelings about this book

Speaking of narrators I love…
The great Bahni Turpin gives voice to Natasha Díaz’s debut novel Color Me In. This coming-of-age tale explores friendship, first love, and what racism and religious intolerance can do to a family. The cover alone was enough to sell me on this one, but in case you need any more convincing, check out this quote from best-selling author Nic Stone: A riveting testament to the power of knowing where you come from to figure out where you’re going...an emotional roller coaster you won’t want to get off of. Absolutely outstanding!

Now, they're in the same time zone (although over 1,000 miles apart), and in the real world, and it's the worst, but they still have each other's support. For relationships. Questionable roommates. Internships. And whether or not it's a good idea to take in a feral cat.
