Welcome, friends,
to the latest sci-fi & fantasy newsletter! Shiny new look, same ol' nerdy editor rambling on about her favorite genres of all time. Speaking of genres, I'm officially in all-out Halloween mode for October, aka the best month of the year, and my current listening slate shows it—I recently finished In the House in the Dark of the Woods by Laird Hunt, which was the perfect trippy, weird, hypnotic listen to kick off the season of all things spooky (my most overused word of these 31 days of awesome). And of course, I highly recommend our latest horror Audible Original by Jonathan Maberry—more on that below. Until November (which I guess is fine too), happy listening!- Sam, Audible editor

Historia
A young married couple, Matt and Gillian, have just bought a gorgeous house located next to a lake in the Catskills. They want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city to raise their baby girl, Hope, in relative peace and quiet. When night falls, however, their dream home becomes a house of nightmares. Matt and Gillian soon learn that darkness takes many forms. And sometimes, darkness is hungry.

An Audible Original worthy of the season
Talk about a perfect pairing of author & narrator—few narrators can convey dramatic dread quite like Audible Narrator-Hall-of-Famer Scott Brick can, and author Jonathan Maberry tees him up with a delightfully creepy classic haunted house tale. Lullaby is the ideal short listen for when you're craving a good scare—and this month, it's included as part of our October selection of Audible Originals (members can choose any two, no credits needed). Grab some hot apple cider and your headphones and prepare to be unsettled. You just, er, might want to listen to this one with the lights on, and preferably not right before a solo weekend in your apartment, as I may or may not have done...

Historia
Rosewater is a town on the edge. A community formed around the edges of a mysterious alien biodome, its residents comprise the hopeful, the hungry, and the helpless—people eager for a glimpse inside the dome or a taste of its rumored healing powers. Kaaro is a government agent with a criminal past. He has seen inside the biodome, and doesn't care to again—but when something begins killing off others like himself, Kaaro must defy his masters to search for an answer, facing his dark history and coming to a realization about a horrifying future.

A Frankenstein of influences.
I recently had the chance to chat with Tade Thompson, the author of Rosewater, which was probably my favorite sci-fi book so far this year. We chatted about genre, representation, his many, many influences, and the experience of hearing your work brought to life in audio. Rosewater was unlike any sci-fi novel I had listened to before, and after talking with Thompson, that makes sense. He's so observant, I could listen to him talk about books all day. Have a listen and get as excited as I am for book two in the Wormwood trilogy. (In keeping with the Halloween theme, one thing that came up was sci-fi/horror movies that scarred us for life. His? Alien. Mine? Jurassic Park. It's okay, you can laugh.)

The Resistance is fractured. The remaining survivors are buckling under the might of the malicious Tyrant King. Enter Roark von Graf, hedge mage, lesser noble of Traisbin, and one of the last freedom fighters. Desperate and unhinged, Roark crafts one final attempt to overthrow the king. The plan goes awry, and Roark finds himself tumbling headfirst into an interdimensional portal. On the other side, he finds himself stranded in an unexpected place - an ultra-immersive fantasy video game called Hearthworld.

A little something for the gamers among us
Fall is known around here as being the season of big new releases, and the same is true of the video game arena—we'll be getting Red Dead Redemption 2 and Fallout 76 among other exciting new entries in favorite franchises. So the not-entirely new, but definitely hot-right-now genre of LitRPG is top of mind around our offices right now. As my fellow editor and fantasy listener Melissa puts it, it's like the book version of watching someone play a video game. Check out her very comprehensive dive into this super fun, entertaining subgenre—complete with recommendations for total noobs and elite gamers alike.

Historia
On a cold spring night in 1952, a huge meteorite fell to earth and obliterated much of the East Coast of the US, including Washington, DC. The ensuing climate cataclysm will soon render the Earth inhospitable for humanity, as the last such meteorite did for the dinosaurs. This looming threat calls for a radically accelerated effort to colonize space and requires a much-larger share of humanity to take part in the process. Elma York’s drive to become the first lady astronaut is so strong that even the most dearly held conventions of society may not stand a chance against her.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

About the Editor
Sam is obsessed with sci-fi & fantasy in all forms, with a particular soft spot for robots, time travel, and kick-ass heroines. When she’s not exploring distant galaxies and treacherous dungeons, she enjoys a healthy dose of memoirs, horror, and true crime. She is also an avid knitter who uses audiobooks to get her through mundane and challenging patterns—even if the more intense listens tend to mess with her tension.
