I have a confession:
I’ve been cheating on sci-fi and fantasy a bit with another genre. Yep, I’m in a full-on mystery & thriller kick—the more twisty and mind-blowing the better. After devouring my seventh thriller since the fall (I’m not kidding—it’s a problem), I was starting to feel a bit guilty—like I should pick up a good SFF listen stat. But I got to thinking...do the two have to be mutually exclusive? Aren’t some of the best SFF stories centered around a big, unanswered question that needs to be solved? More on that below—but suffice to say, I’m going to keep riding this wave for a while and see what interesting listens it takes me to!(Don’t worry, this new love affair with mysteries doesn’t affect my Valentine’s Day plans—my husband and I will be celebrating in the best way we can think of: playing D&D with our friends.)

Historia
A millennium into the future two advancements have altered the course of human history: the colonization of the galaxy and the creation of the positronic brain. Isaac Asimov's Robot novels chronicle the unlikely partnership between a New York City detective and a humanoid robot who must learn to work together. Like most people left behind on an over-populated Earth, New York City police detective Elijah Baley had little love for either the arrogant Spacers or their robotic companions.

Bring on more video game-inspired listens!
Says my colleague Edwin, who recently listened to and loved this soon-to-be-released audio thriller set in the Assassin’s Creed universe. In his words: Riz Ahmed, Danny Wallace, Tamara Lawrence, and Anthony Head as Isaac Newton (!!) give stellar performances in this breathtaking listen that captures the adrenaline-fueled action sequences from the video games.
Hear, hear, Edwin!

Science fiction allows us to go places we can only dream of seeing - other worlds, distant stars, entirely different galaxies. While not every story is concerned with the hard science behind space travel and other futuristic ventures, fiction can give us amazing insight into what we could be capable of and what we dream of doing. In these 10 lectures, Professor Erin Macdonald interweaves real science and the achievements of the imagination to reveal the truth that underlies our favorite stories and sheds light on what the future may hold.

And one more genre twist for you
Nonfiction is my other, other great listening love, and with a title like The Science of Sci-Fi, this new listen from The Great Courses felt like it was made just for me. If you’ve ever wondered just how near we are to technologies like warp speed, wormholes, and time dilation (and I mean, who hasn’t?), I highly recommend this fun and informative course. Professor Erin Macdonald is described as an astrophysicist and science fiction consultant—does she need an intern?

Ella has a Thing. She sees a classmate grow up to become a caring nurse. A neighbor's son murdered in a drive-by shooting. Things that haven't happened yet. Kev, born while Los Angeles burned around them, wants to protect his sister from a power that could destroy her. But when Kev is incarcerated, Ella must decide what it means to watch her brother suffer while holding the ability to wreck cities in her hands. Rooted in the hope that can live in anger, Riot Baby is as much an intimate family story as a global dystopian narrative.

Voices in action
We’re also in the midst of Black History Month here at Audible. Check out the amazing list of titles my colleague Abby put together to celebrate. I recommend checking out her fiction list—a few of the picks there have a bit of a SFF crossover to them. (Riot Baby just jumped to the very top of my listen list for this month!)

About the Editor
Sam is obsessed with sci-fi & fantasy in all forms, with a particular soft spot for robots, time travel, and kick-ass heroines. When she’s not exploring distant galaxies and treacherous dungeons, she enjoys a healthy dose of memoirs, horror, and true crime. She is also an avid knitter who uses audiobooks to get her through mundane and challenging patterns—even if the more intense listens tend to mess with her tension.
