The jingle bells
have been ringing and sequins blinging, but the end of the year can also be a bit stressful. And where there’s stress, there’s often a cold or two. Sneezes in the office have hit their all-time peak, but I’m on high-alert where my immune system is concerned and am determined to stay healthy for the rest of the year (armed with plenty of vitamin C and hand sanitizer). In addition to all of my precautionary measures, Ah-Choo! has proven to be a fascinating guidebook to avoiding and combating the common cold. After all, you have to know a little bit about the enemy before you can fight it off. Here’s hoping your final days of 2018 are full of good health and good fortune (instead of sneezing, coughing, and runny noses). See you in 2019!

Historia
Before men ruled the earth, there were wolves. Once abundant in North America, these majestic creatures were hunted to near extinction in the lower 48 states by the 1920s. But in recent decades, conservationists have brought wolves back to the Rockies, igniting a battle over the very soul of the West. With novelistic detail, Nate Blakeslee tells the gripping story of one of these wolves, O-Six, a charismatic alpha female named for the year of her birth.

It's just the nature of things
I was one of those kids who loved animal books. I’d always sit with my stuffed animals, hungry to learn more about the real-life versions of my plush companions (one of my favorites was a Humboldt penguin named Baby Penguin). To commemorate Baby Penguin and winter weather, I thought a collection of some cold-weather animal audiobooks was more than appropriate. After all, you’re never too old to learn about animals.

Historia
Drawing on dozens of intimate audio interviews with families from all across the country, award-winning psychologist and writer Andrew Solomon redefines what it means to be an “ideal family” in America today. Solomon observes that America, led in large part by the women’s, civil rights, and gay rights movements, has undergone a radical social shift in the last few decades. Although the structure of family has changed, economic and legal structures lag behind and need to adapt to accommodate this explosive new reality.

Ohana means...
Family is a huge part of the holidays for me. But outside of my own ideas of family (I like to think it can apply to friends, relatives, or anyone that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside), it’s a word that can mean a ton of different things to all different groups of people. Exploring this idea, New Family Values considers the always-evolving structures and visions of American Families. So pull up a chair and take a listen with your own.

The Boys are back
Straight from editor Courtney’s mouth, the Beastie Boys almost feel like my long, lost—but so much cooler than me—brothers. Keeping their cool factor in mind, there’s no denying the group’s influence and history in the early days of hip-hop and 1980s New York City. Editors (and long-time fans) Kat and Courtney recently had the opportunity to chat with Ad-Rock and Mike D, and you definitely don’t want to miss it.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Historia
Whether pondering black holes or predicting discoveries at CERN, physicists believe the best theories are beautiful, natural, and elegant, and this standard separates popular theories from disposable ones. This is why, Sabine Hossenfelder argues, we have not seen a major breakthrough in the foundations of physics for more than four decades. The belief in beauty has become so dogmatic that it now conflicts with scientific objectivity: Observation has been unable to confirm mindboggling theories, like supersymmetry or grand unification, invented by physicists based on aesthetic criteria.
