You guys,

I'm still buzzing from the loveliest conversation with Kiese Laymon about his memoir, Heavy, which Audible chose as our 2018 Audiobook of the Year. In one scene he describes trying to fill a hole inside him with slices of cold pizza from a college trash can, and I told him it was one of my favorite parts of the whole book. He was surprised, but also delighted—and we bonded over our shared belief that the most painful $h*t can also be the most hilarious. Because (to paraphrase another amazing writer) how else are we supposed to get through our one wild and precious life?

Garbage pizza aside, talking to Kiese was kind of life-changing. He kept dropping gems, including a story about his mom's reaction to the audiobook that made me realize I didn’t really know anything at all about audiobooks until that very moment. And I still have goosebumps days later. I hope you’ll treat yourself to a listen.
