You guys,
I'm still buzzing from the loveliest conversation with Kiese Laymon about his memoir, Heavy, which Audible chose as our 2018 Audiobook of the Year. In one scene he describes trying to fill a hole inside him with slices of cold pizza from a college trash can, and I told him it was one of my favorite parts of the whole book. He was surprised, but also delighted—and we bonded over our shared belief that the most painful $h*t can also be the most hilarious. Because (to paraphrase another amazing writer) how else are we supposed to get through our one wild and precious life?Garbage pizza aside, talking to Kiese was kind of life-changing. He kept dropping gems, including a story about his mom's reaction to the audiobook that made me realize I didn’t really know anything at all about audiobooks until that very moment. And I still have goosebumps days later. I hope you’ll treat yourself to a listen.

Historia
Before she was a trauma cleaner, Sandra Pankhurst was many things: husband and father, drag queen, gender reassignment patient, sex worker, small businesswoman, trophy wife... but as a little boy, raised in violence and excluded from the family home, she just wanted to belong. Now she believes her clients deserve no less. A man who bled quietly to death in his living room. Sarah Krasnostein has watched the extraordinary Sandra Pankhurst bring order and care to these, the living and the dead - and the book she has written is equally extraordinary.

Beautiful, emotional, and perfectly narrated.

Somebody's gotta do it
Did you know that it’s someone’s actual job to engineer the pyrotechnics for KISS’s electric guitars? Or that a woman in Australia runs a small business cleaning up after the very worst things that can happen to you? Or that, at the Tower of London, a Yeoman Warder is duty-sworn to feed the ravens their favorite snack of biscuits soaked in blood?? As part of my own (mostly normal) job as memoir editor, I rounded up some of the most fascinating listens about the weirdest professions. You’re welcome. 😘

In 2005, Kerri Rawson opened the door of her apartment to greet an FBI agent who shared the shocking news that her father had been arrested for murdering 10 people, including two children. That’s also when she first learned that her father was the notorious serial killer known as BTK, a name he’d given himself that described the horrific way he committed his crimes: Bind, torture, kill.

Couldn't Get Through it
- De M. Waite en 01-30-19
The mother daughter of all true crime memoirs
Kerri Rawson's astonishing memoir about learning her beloved father had been leading a double life as a serial killer touched me to my core. I'm all for the complicated father-daughter-relationship
memoir, and it doesn't get any more complicated than my dad is a serial killer.
What I love most about this book is how Rawson fully explores the heart's confusion around knowing someone's a monster yet loving them anyway. My fellow editor (and book soulmate) Kat put it best: It’s the most soul-searching, insightful, and compelling account by a serial killer's loved one (and victim) I’ve ever come across.
