November is
both National Novel Writing Month and a time to give thanks, and this month I’m grateful to NOT be working on a book, though props to you if you are. Writing is hard, guys! I recently made my own piece of content—a free audio essay about true crime called Murder, We Spoke—and while I’m very proud to see it out in the world, I’m even more humbled by how much effort it took to create even a 45-minute listen. The experience has multiplied my respect for writers (and not just the ones you can hear in the essay, including Attica Locke, Sarah Weinman, Billy Jensen, and more!). On that note, there's so much great work to celebrate this month…along with some writing inspo for those on the NaNoWriMo train. Keep going!! I’m cheering you on from afar.

When a grisly crime becomes an obsession
Speaking of great writers, Charlie Donlea (The Girl Who Was Taken) is a master of suspense. His latest novel follows a forensic reconstructionist who gets swept into the cold case of five women who went missing in Chicago back in 1979. My fellow editor and thriller aficionado, Nicole, got her ears on this one and says, Narrated by Nina Alvamar, this is an unparalleled audio-adventure that takes listeners down the rabbit hole of a terrible case. Listeners are immersed in the life and last days of one of the victims, only to come up with more questions than answers. It’s un-put-downable until the very end!

Suddenly, right before his eyes, a terrorist group launches its deadly attack. Instinctively, he dives forward to break it up, and is shot. It is not until he wakes up in the hospital that he learns whose lives he has saved - the Duke and Duchess of Kent.

Jack is back
Another thing to be grateful for: Jack Ryan. Streaming TV has been in the news of late and it’s hard not to be lured by all the dazzling new programming. The John Krasinski-led Amazon adaptation of Tom Clancy’s espionage thrillers hits my sweet spot of being both shiny and new while featuring beloved, iconic characters in fresh peril. And while the TV show has Krasinski and the fantastic Wendell Pierce, only the audiobook series has narrator Scott Brick and his legendary voice. Who says you can’t watch *and* listen?

Anyone can write a novel now, and in this essential book of tips, practical advice, and wisdom, Walter Mosley promises that the writer-in-waiting can finish it in one year. Good writing is no mystery
If you’re one of the brave souls sticking to your NaNoWriMo goals this month, look no further than this genre to get you over the home stretch, as some of the best writing—fight me—is by mystery and thriller authors. Two of the biggest names in crime fiction are on this list of the 10 best audiobooks on writing, including Walter Mosley and some guy named Stephen King. These prolific scribes have some serious chops when it comes to practical tips, techniques, and creative inspiration to finish the month strong.

Historia
They were a perfect and beautiful family - until a heartbreaking tragedy shattered their happiness. Now, for the sake of an inheritance that will ensure their future, the children must be hidden away out of sight, as if they never existed. They are kept in the attic of their grandmother’s labyrinthine mansion, isolated and alone. As the visits from their seemingly unconcerned mother slowly dwindle, the four children grow ever closer and depend upon one another to survive both this cramped world and their cruel grandmother.

Lordy lordy, look who’s 40 😱
In a flurry of panicked tidying for my parents’ Thanksgiving visit, I downloaded the new 40th anniversary edition of Flowers in the Attic. Four hours and several Golly lolly!
s later, my house was spotless and my mouth was agape from Mena Suvari’s flawless narration of V.C. Andrews’s Gothic classic about the beautiful Dollangangers and their many twisted secrets. Whether you’re new to Flowers or if—like me and Gillian Flynn, who provides a provocative foreword—you’ve devoured it countless times, Suvari’s reading is the perfect way to encounter this deeply weird, deeply beloved tale. Wicked women, taboo trysts, and dicey donuts abound. Golly lolly, indeed!

Set on a large ranch in rural upstate New York, it’s early days for the eccentric group of people who call themselves "The Zeta Family" - quite possibly the next big cult phenomenon. Our protagonist, Katie, is an aspiring reporter who has decided to infiltrate the compound, and her future success as a journalist depends entirely on her ability to win the confidence of Zeta Doug, the likable spiritual leader of the group. He’s like a cross between Hunter S. Thompson and George R. R. Martin, with a little too much sci-fi in his head and acid in his blood stream.
