Hello spring—
but what is a fan of the dark side to do when faced with months of balmier days ahead? Just surrender to all those chirping birds and blooming flowers? Maybe my secret goth side is showing, but even when the skies are sunny I seem to seek out morbid storylines, twisted psyches, and deadly whodunits. But it’s OK because this week I’m among my people! The Death Becomes Us festival has just landed in New York, giving us murder-obsessed weirdos a place to congregate and talk about the sprawling landscape of the genre, from the serious to the silly. I’m especially excited for the appearances of some of my favorite true crime audiobook stars: Paul Holes, Damien Echols, and Billy Jensen (more on him after this!).And after the party’s over—well, we’ve still got April showers and that whole
cruelest monththing to look forward to, right? (Though as an April baby myself, I personally think T.S. Eliot was being a bit unfair.) Here’s what I can’t stop buzzing about for spring.

Historia
In Chase Darkness with Me, you’ll ride shotgun as journalist Billy Jensen identifies the Halloween Mask Murderer, finds a missing girl in the California Redwoods, and investigates the only other murder in New York City on 9/11. You’ll hear intimate details of the hunts for two of the most terrifying serial killers in history: his friend Michelle’s pursuit of the Golden State Killer which is chronicled in I’ll Be Gone In The Dark which Billy helped finish after Michelle’s passing, and his own quest to find the murderer of the Allenstown 4 family.

The patron saint of web sleuths spills his secrets
You know Billy Jensen as the intrepid journalist who helped finish I’ll Be Gone in the Dark after Michelle McNamara passed away—the two were the ultimate partners in crime.
More recently, he reframed the true crime conversation by posting poignant tributes to Ted Bundy’s victims on Twitter. Now, the relentless champion of underreported, unresolved crimes tells his own story in his own (endearing, if understandably world-weary) voice. His new memoir Chase Darkness With Me is capital-F fantastic, and I’m so excited that it’s available exclusively on Audible—with a foreword by Karen Kilgariff (!!!). Jensen clearly has true crime street cred to spare, and here, he shines all on his own.

Historia
In 2009, Edie had New York’s social world in her thrall. Mercurial and beguiling, she was the shining star of a group of recent graduates living in a Brooklyn loft and treating New York like their playground. When Edie’s body was found near a suicide note at the end of a long, drunken night, no one could believe it. Grief, shock, and resentment scattered the group and brought the era to an abrupt end.

I don’t usually write reviews

The Brooklyn thriller is finally a thing
The Lost Night is basically the Brooklyn hipster murder mystery I halfway dreamed I might someday write, till Stuff Hipsters Hate author Andrea Bartz swooped in and did a better job of it than I could ever do (and got it optioned for a TV series to boot). Expertly performed via multicast narration, the plot concerns a magazine journalist who discovers tantalizing clues to a presumed suicide in a Bushwick loft a decade earlier, and becomes utterly consumed—Billy Jensen-like, one might say—by the case. If you like New York glamour, 20-something ennui, and cold-case obsessions, this one’s for you.

Historia
When Aisling Conroy's boyfriend Jack is found in the freezing black waters of the river Corrib, the police tell her it was suicide. A surgical resident, she throws herself into study and work, trying to forget - until Jack's sister Maude shows up. Maude suspects foul play, and she is determined to prove it. Cormac Reilly is the detective assigned with the re-investigation of a seemingly accidental overdose 20 years ago - the overdose of Jack and Maude's drug-and-alcohol-addled mother. Reilly is under increasing pressure to charge Maude for murder when his colleague Danny uncovers new evidence....

Believe the hype about The Ruin
Because I am decidedly NOT a 20-something anymore, I didn’t spend St. Patrick’s Day weekend in a crowded pub drinking radioactive green beer—can we cheers to that? Instead, I celebrated my sliver of Irish heritage by finally succumbing to the hype around The Ruin, Dervla McTiernan’s knockout first novel in the Cormac Reilly series (Book 2, The Scholar, comes out in May). The Galway setting adds a distinct air of Irish melancholy that permeates this cleverly composed police procedural, and McTiernan’s legal training and Irish upbringing are authentically apparent. It’s an atmospheric and unsettling ride—all in Aoife McMahon’s gorgeous Irish accent, of course.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.
