Don’t worry—
we aren’t here to talk about getting to inbox zero or how to fold our socks into tidy little squares. I wouldn’t dare bore mystery and thriller fans with such mundane New Year’s resolutions—not when listening goals are so much more fun. Not only that, but you don’t even have to leave the crime genre to find inspiration for self-improvement. For example: want to save money this year? Just listen to Social Creature, Tara Isabella Burton’s dark, stylish, and frequently hilarious thriller about a toxic friendship set amid New York’s most pretentious nightlife and a hellish helping of social media. You’ll soon find yourself inclined to stay in, maybe even make good on Dry January—if you’re made of stronger stuff than I.With that, here are my top resolutions for 2019; no budgeting, dieting, or decluttering required! Pop in your earbuds and join me, won’t you?

Historia
New York Times best-selling author James Lee Burke's Dave Robicheaux novels began with this first hard-hitting entry in the series. In The Neon Rain, Detective Robicheaux fishes a prostitute's corpse from a New Orleans bayou and finds that no one, not even the law, cares about a dead hooker.

1. Conquer a classic series
James Lee Burke just gets better with age—or so I’ve heard. Don’t @ me, but I somehow haven’t yet listened to his Robicheaux books! With accolades pouring in for The New Iberia Blues, 2019 is the year for me to make amends. Where else to start but at the beginning? The premise of The Neon Rain—in which Detective Robicheaux finds the body of a sex worker in a New Orleans bayou and struggles to get anyone to care—feels especially relevant now, when we’re giving needed attention to cases involving high-risk victims and marginalized communities. The fact that it’s narrated by Will Patton just sweetens the deal, because he’s often considered the definitive voice of the series. That's more hearsay—for now!

2. Mix up my listening routine
I’ve got audiobooks and podcasts down cold. But I haven’t listened to nearly as many multicast audio dramas, a situation that stops now. There’s so much innovation and imagination happening in this space, but the hottest thing on my radar is Last Seen Wearing, created especially for Audible by the inventive author David Hewson. Perfect for fans of procedurals and binge-worthy TV thrillers, it’s about a former NYPD cop turned PI hunting down a missing girl. A fast-paced, episodic listen featuring fantastic talent and audio effects, this one is probably going to be marked finished in my library by the time you read this sentence

Matt frantically tells park rangers that he and his wife, Marie, were hiking when she fell off a cliff into the raging river below. They start a search, but they aren’t hopeful: No one could have survived that fall. It was a tragic accident. But Matt’s first wife also died in suspicious circumstances. And when the police pull a body out of the river, they have a lot more questions for Matt.

3. Don't take relationship tips from thrillers
I’ve got a pretty good domestic thing going—great kids, a hilarious husband, healthy parents, in-laws I don’t hate (!). Now why would I go and mess it up by being anything like these 10 seriously twisted families on this list? I’m currently listening to the first one—JoAnn Chaney’s delightfully warped As Long As We Both Shall Live—which grabbed me right from the first line: If you try to kill your wife without a plan, you will fail.
Actually, that’s pretty solid advice. We can at least resolve we won’t do that this year…right?

4. Listen with a higher purpose
I like a good pulp novel or lurid headline as much as the next person—OK, more. All the more reason why I’m making a point to focus my attention on works that have an ethical purpose along with the requisite memorable characters and gripping plot. Ausma Zehanat Khan has made fighting injustice a central tenet of her dual careers as a human rights lawyer and author. Her 2018 thriller A Dangerous Crossing stars a Muslim detective on an international hunt for the truth behind an NGO case worker’s disappearance, shedding light on some of our most perplexing real world problems in the process.
