Does anyone else
need a break from best-of-the-year discussions? Everywhere I look—Twitter, my circle of friends, work here at Audible—everyone is breathlessly arguing over which books, listens, movies, and video games were the best of 2019. While I find myself nodding my head in agreement at a lot of the winning picks, there are a few great titles that I want to see get a little more love—so check them out!As far as 2019 goes, I think it was a banner year for children’s literature. Slowly but surely, it’s becoming more open minded, more representative, and more culturally relevant. Hopefully the trend continues in 2020—but for now, here’re two listens featuring kids in New Orleans (because why not?) and a recommendation for those of you who’ve also caught Star Wars space-fever.

Historia
There’s more to the swamplands than meets the teeth. In this supernatural tale of magic and mysticism, Henry Lemarchand grew up in Philadelphia knowing very little of his family—his father disappeared when he was young, leaving behind only a strange pouch of animal teeth. When he is sent to the Louisiana bayou to spend the summer with his eccentric uncle and cousin in their decaying ancestral mansion, Henry learns about his family’s supernatural legacy.

A city boy in a supernatural swamp
Henry, a troubled 12-year-old boy from Philly, is sent by his mother to the Bayou to reconnect with his deceased father’s family in the hopes that spending more time with his relatives will help him find himself. As it turns out, Henry’s lineage proves to be supernatural: he’s part of a long line of rootcrafters, those who can absorb the powers and memories of anyone (or anything) whose teeth they touch. Eww, right? But this admittedly weird conceit ends up being both functional and fantastical; Henry not only wins the speed of an eagle and the strength of a bear by touching ancient talons and teeth, but also a deeper sense of belonging by connecting with his ancestors’ memories. This is a well-told tale of identity and belonging set in a world entirely unlike any other.

After Gram reads Viva an article in the local paper about a missing treasure related to the world-famous song, “Miss Mary Mack”, Viva heads through the Crescent City on an epic adventure to track down the treasure. The clues lead Viva to the French Quarter, a jazz club, a creepy cemetery, and even the circus.

Long live Viva!
I’ve never been to New Orleans but I feel like this listen is virtually guaranteed to get you and the kids in your life interested in visiting. Viva Durant’s got it all: a mysterious, missing treasure; narration by the Audie Award-winning Bahni Turpin; incredible jazz music composed by the author, Ashli St. Armant; and enough heart, soul, and hijinks to keep you engaged from the first note to the last. In what is becoming a rather lovely trend in Audible kidlit, this title marries proven musical talent with high production value and established narrative talent.

All Star Wars, all the time
In case you’ve been living under a (space) rock the last few weeks, the new Star Wars live action show, The Mandalorian, is all the rage right now. I’m two episodes in, and it’s great fun. I’m not yet sure if it’s a great show for kids—you’d have to be the judge there—but so far it’s lived up to the hype. Lucky for us, there’s quite a bit of child-friendly Star Wars content for kids available on Audible—like these audiobook versions of the original movie trilogy by Listening Library. I wholeheartedly recommend the series for its high production value, wonderful voice acting, and iconic sound effects. They’re great for sci-fi nerds of all ages—and the whole family, especially those who want to relive the magic.

The colonists from the Pathfinder have arrived on Kaguya, a planet with low gravity but a very dense atmosphere. It’s fun to jump around, but the air makes you loopy - and worse than that, the heavy atmosphere means that wind storms, although rare, are absolutely devastating. Zero and Nyx help to get everything locked down before the first big storm, but they stumble onto a group of thieves who have stolen some mining equipment. Before the kids have a chance to get away and tell anyone, the storm hits and the massive winds carry them far away.
