Remember 1989? Me, too! That fall my guilty pleasure was A Prayer for Owen Meany, which had just been published. I was studying Russian (unsuccessfully), mostly because I liked the other students in my Russian class: I would’ve been content to decipher a line of Chekhov; they were all dreaming of espionage and world domination. When the Berlin Wall fell, we were all stunned. Thirty years later, I’m still fascinated by the end of the Cold War (did it end? Really?)…and espionage stories…and the best books of the year.

Speaking of Russian espionage….
Regarding the Cold War, here are some listens about spycraft IRL, all involving the KGB, all involving secrets stolen on American soil between 1946 – 2010. From the famous Mitrokhin Archive spirited out of Russia by a defector, to a history of the CIA Moscow station, to the modern-day infiltrations of the CIA and FBI via Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen, respectively, here are nonfiction stories that read like thrillers! And, people, let’s try to do better, ok? It wouldn’t hurt to Spy the Lie going forward . Just sayin’…
