I was all gung-ho
about finishing off my TBLT (to be listened to) list for 2018 when you last heard from me. I still had a few weeks left of December, and was full of hope and self-satisfaction. Well, I failed. Not miserably, but still a failure. I hadn’t been so ambitious to think I’d get to everything on our Best of 2018 list, but I still fell short of my goal—plus I’ve discovered even more books I wasn’t even aware of until recently.
Now that it’s a new year, I’ve decided to approach this as an opportunity. After all, it’s all about WHY I love to listen, not how much I finish over an arbitrary period of time. I’m reminded of how books can transform, comfort, and challenge me in ways so much more satisfying than simply tackling a list, or hitting a number (more on that below). So, I forgive myself, but will continue to eagerly stack my TBLT list with the anticipation that the right stories will reveal themselves to me at the right time.

Historia
In Lydia Kiesling's razor-sharp debut novel, The Golden State, we accompany Daphne, a young mother on the edge of a breakdown, as she flees her sensible but strained life in San Francisco for the high desert of Altavista with her toddler Honey. Bucking under the weight of being a single parent - her Turkish husband is unable to return to the United States because of a "processing error" - Daphne takes refuge in a mobile home left to her by her grandparents in hopes that the quiet will bring clarity.

10 listens I almost missed in 2018
’There are, undoubtedly, more than 10 books that never made it onto my personal radar in 2018, but these are the ones I feel guiltiest about neglecting. I’ve already begun to make amends by starting with my lead title, The Golden State. What a crazy, wonderful ride this listen has been! It gives an almost uncomfortably realistic view of motherhood, is a road trip tale, and is uniquely California in the best of ways. The next nine novels on my list—a blend of contemporary, historical and literary—are each highly regarded and well worth checking out now if, like me, you missed them the first time around.

Diane Lane performs an Audible exclusive from Curtis Sittenfeld
It’s amazing how impactful less than an hour of audio can be! With all of the wit and insight you’d expect from acclaimed author Curtis Sittenfeld, Atomic Marriage tells a tale of an ambitious woman, a self-help celebrity, and a marriage on the brink. Actress Diane Lane is perfectly cast to narrate this explosively entertaining yet heart-wrenching story. These characters left me grinning, tearing up, and shaking my head in disapproval all at the same time.
