Sugar arrives in the small town of Bigelow, Arkansas, like an ominous storm. She saunters down the street in a blonde wig and spiked heels, cigarette dangling between red-painted lips. Without even speaking to her, the women in town hate her. But when she moves in next door to Pearl, a woman who tragically lost her daughter 15 years earlier, the two women bond over tragic pasts.

This is one of my favorite listens because it draws you in from the beginning—from incredible the narration to the whirlwind of emotions that touches on so many different elements. Love, hate, suspense, drama and tragedy are all beautifully woven together by the author. The characters come to life and seems like you’re right by their side throughout the entire story. This Audible book is definitely a winner!

Historia
From Lauren Graham, the beloved star of Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, comes a witty, charming, and hilariously relatable debut novel about a struggling young actress trying to get ahead - and keep it together - in New York City. It’s January 1995, and Franny Banks has just six months left of the three-year deadline she set for herself when she came to New York, dreaming of Broadway and doing "important" work. But all she has to show for her efforts so far is a part in an ad for ugly Christmas sweaters, and a gig waiting tables at a comedy club....

The character in Someday, Someday Maybe, like myself, is far from home and trying to be successful in a new, big city. It really resonated with me and shows how you can expect your life will be one way, and then with some help from the universe and hard work, things can surprisingly change and still work out in the best way.

With his now-legendary store on 125th Street in Harlem, Dapper Dan pioneered high-end streetwear in the 1980s, remixing classic luxury-brand logos into his own innovative, glamorous designs. But before he reinvented haute couture, he was a hungry boy with holes in his shoes, a teen who daringly gambled drug dealers out of their money, and a young man in a prison cell who found nourishment in books. In this remarkable memoir, he tells his full story for the first time.

This listen is a personal favorite because Dapper Dan’s memoir incorporated so much of his Harlem childhood and captured the essence of perseverance. So much so, that if you closed your eyes, you can picture the scenery and the harsh realities he had to overcome, and that to me, is what makes a good storyteller. Anyone wanting to pursue their dreams and understand the makings of strength will love this book. It also helps that actor Omari Hardwick, of the TV Series “Power,” narrates alongside Dapper Dan!

Listening to this memoir was my favorite Audible experience (so far) because it’s a creative and heartfelt journey through the life of Common, a well-known rapper, actor, and activist that I’ve admired for years. I love how he was able to tell his truth, his pain, his failures, his triumphs, his obstacles, and continuous journey to be better. He went through many trials and tribulations, but still had the drive to overcome and work at how to love more, and that to me is inspiring. Plus, hearing his music infused in the story makes the experience so entertaining!

As an animal lover (especially dogs), I absolutely loved this listen. This story takes you on an adventure of the love between a man (Denny) and his dog (Enzo), who believes he is more human than dog, and then, Enzo having to adjust to life with Denny’s new family. If you love animals and can relate to their feelings, it’s a must listen!

Springsteen bares his soul in this memoir. Writing of his struggles and successes on and off stage, his unconventional, semi-dysfunctional upbringing, and his battles with depression and familial relationships. Listening to him narrate adds authenticity like no other. Like an epic Springsteen show, I didn’t want this listen to end. I highly recommend Born to Run to all—not just Springsteen fans.
