Books We Think Are Real Turkeys

As much as we love all things storytelling, even we can acknowledge that all books are not for everyone, especially those books that are considered classics or (gasp!) required reading. Here are a few of the books that have a not-so-soft spot in our hearts.

    • While I adore most of Tolstoy’s 60-hour master class on fancy Russian parties, cloak-and-dagger schemes, and battlefield heroics, it’s the epilogue that makes this book a real turkey in my eyes. After more than 50 dazzling, action-packed hours, it jumps of a cliff of crushing boredom where Tolstoy decides to launch into all his rambling crazy-uncle philosophies one last time… for 5 hours. What a turkey. —Rachel

    • Full disclosure, I haven’t listened to this one, and I never will. Because reading it for a high school history class almost broke me, I found it so mind-numbingly boring. But if this is your cup o’ tea, more power to you. It’s a confirmed “classic” so clearly some people love it! —Emily

    • I really, really wanted to like Moby-Dick. I liked the broad strokes, the imagery, and the philosophical notes of Moby-Dick. I even have many favorite takeaways lines from Moby-Dick. But that’s because I forced myself to trudge through the countless pages of nautical details and deep dives on whale parts and boiling blubber (eck, I just gagged a little). It’s been called "the most ambitious book ever conceived by an American writer,” and yet all I could think was that Melville could have used a better editor. —Abby

    • Obviously, Ayn Rand has an enormous fan base, but her writing style is just not for me. Every time something interesting starts to happen in The Fountainhead, it dives into a 17-page lecture on the philosophy of individualism. As a text, it’s terrifically boring, and I finished it purely out of stubbornness. —Michael

    • I have a lot of self-imposed classics guilt. In my post-collegiate years, I've taken it upon myself to finish the rare few timeless works that weren't assigned to me in school. After all, what kind of book nerd am I if I can't speak to the foundations of contemporary literature? Enter Oliver Twist. Let's just say it's the first book I've ever given myself permission to not finish. —Katie
