The 90s are back! Relive your favorite decade with these iconic listens.
There’s no denying that overalls, crop tops, and dad sneakers are back in style, and right on schedule, as pop culture tends to repeat itself every two decades. And even though the 90s weren’t perfect, the passage of time has smoothed out their rough edges and left me longing for the comfort of pizza rolls, a pint of Ben & Jerry’s Chubby Hubby, and a Thursday night on the sofa watching Friends. Since we (sadly) don’t yet have a time-machine to take us back to the grunge old days, how about curling up with these listens and reliving your favorite decade with these deep dives into some of the cultural milestones that came to define it?—Rachel, Audible Editor

    • No Soup For You
    • Everyone has a favorite Seinfeld moment, from Jerry's puffy shirt to the endearingly cranky Soup Nazi. Or maybe it's the time those pretzels were making Kramer thirsty, Elaine's bizarre dance moves, or George's dad inventing Festivus. But what all of us who watched can agree on is that this little show about "nothing" forever raised the bar for TV comedy.

    • Friendship Never Goes Out of Fashion
    • Before 1994, no one in my humble midwestern town knew what a coffee shop even was. But then Friends changed all that. Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, and Joey brought coffee shop culture into American living rooms across the country, along with sweet traditions like "Friendsgiving" and the haircut rocked by all the girls at my junior high, "The Rachel."

    • D'oh!
    • Although The Simpsons started as a subversive cult favorite, soon we were all watching to see what Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie would be up to in the opening credits each week. It quickly became a who's who of the 90s, with cameos by A-list celebrities like Winona Ryder, James Earl Jones, Bette Middler, and Michael Jackson. And with its smart and scrappy sensibility, The Simpsons has always been on the cutting edge of cultural commentary.

There was nothing cooler to the 90s teen than having your own TV in your room, which meant all the luckiest kids got to watch Letterman on Late Night and dispense worldly gems from his top 10 list the next day.

While Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love were the era's alt-prom king and queen, Sonic Youth came first and paved the way for the new sound of the 90s.

    • It's, Like, Totally Classic
    • In the 90s, everyone was obsessed with putting a modern twist on the classics. The feuding sisters in 10 Things I Hate About You were inspired by The Taming of the Shrew, and a very young Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes were immortalized as star-crossed lovers in Baz Luhrman’s Romeo + Juliet. And my favorite, the fashion- and romance-obsessed Clueless, imagines what would happen if Jane Austen’s teen drama, Emma, took place in 1990s Beverly Hills. As if!

Chuck Palahniuk’s subversive take on masculinity struck a chord with a new generation of readers who related to Tyler Durden’s apathetic existence and his subsequent reawakening in a violent secret underground club where guys punched each other. And with its cerebral twist ending, Fight Club is existential and mindbending in that uniquely 90s way.

    • I was one of the 150 million people who watched the 1995 O.J. verdict. My junior high science teacher stopped teaching his lesson so we could all watch together on the classroom TV. The O.J. Simpson murder trial was a pivotal moment of the 90s for so many reasons, not least of which were what it revealed about racial tensions, the criminal justice system, and attitudes about domestic violence. But its true legacy is that it turned news into entertainment—a seismic shift with repercussions that we’re still unraveling to this day.
